Waterbury-Janina A. (Szymanoska) Golebiewski, age 97, widow of Anthony Golebiewski, passed away at her home on Monday March 18, 2019 after a long illness. She was born in Warsaw, Poland on March 4, 1922, daughter of the late Teodor and Maria Szymanoska. She was interned at a concentration camp in Germany and made passage to Sweden after the ending of World War II.

Janina married her husband Anthony in Sweden. Together with their son first son Jerry, they immigrated to the United States in 1954 and settled in Waterbury. She was an incredible homemaker who loved cooking and baking, and was a longtime member of the Ladies Guild at St. Stanislaus Church in Waterbury.

She also enjoyed her many shopping trips to downtown Waterbury. Mrs. Golebiewski is survived by her sons, Richard Golebiewski of Woodbury, and Jerry Golebiewski and his wife Laura of Chicago; her sister Jadwiga of Sweden; her four grandchildren, Christine, Robert, Anthony and Lauren; her great grandson Luca; and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral will be held on Friday March 22, 2019 at 10 a.m. from the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald-Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main Street, Naugatuck, to St. Hedwig’s Church, 32 Golden Hill Street, Naugatuck for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. James cemetery.
