Jay Lindburg, 58, of Shenandoah, Iowa peacefully entered into rest on Saturday, January 19, 2019 surrounded by family at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. Celebration of Life Services following cremation for Jay will be held on Friday, January 25, 2019 at 10:30 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah with Rev. Rick Sleyster officiating.

The family will greet relatives and friends with visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials in Jay’s name are being directed to the Shenandoah Fire Department. Jay Lindburg was born on August 17, 1960 in Clinton, Iowa, the second child and first son of Glendon and Evelyn (Scott) Lindburg.

He has an older sister, Teena (Lindburg) Hohl. Glendon and Teena literally moved the family to Davenport, Iowa, the day Jay was born and while Evelyn and Jay were in the hospital. The family lived in Davenport until 1972 where Jay and Teena attended the Davenport public schools.

Jay was in the 7th grade when the family moved to Shenandoah, Iowa where Jay completed his schooling, graduating in 1979 from Shenandoah High School. As a young teenager, Jay rode in RABGRAI II, III and IV. Before graduating from high school, Jay had already found his passion for farming which had been inspired by his father and Grandfather Scott and had already purchased his first tractor and was farming his Grandfather Scott’s Century Farm located west of Shenandoah.

Between 1979 and 1986, Jay continued to farm and also began doing some over-the-road trucking. In 1983, he met Shari Bayless from Kansas City (originally from Northboro) on a blind date and they began dating long distance. Jay and Shari had a long distance relationship until their marriage on October 19, 1985 at the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah.

They made their home in Shenandoah, ultimately purchasing their first home on Summit Street in 1991 where they have continued to live. Jay continued farming until 1986 when he went to work for Shen-Ag as a blender operator. On May 22, 1995, Jay and Shari were thrilled to welcome the birth of their son, Evan James.

Jay and Shari attended and supported their son through his youth and graduation from the Shenandoah schools with countless hours of bleacher sitting in attending all school events, programs and sports and were members of the Shenandoah Athletic Booster Club. Jay’s skills and talents were many and his working career exemplified those skills. Jay had the talent to operate anything with a motor and in his career, he was a semi driver for various companies – Bill Miller Trucking, Transportation Specialists, Ag Com, CFI, and Earl May Seed and Nursery, where he logged over 1 million miles in his 10-year career.

During these years, Jay returned to his love of farming by working for Mack Teachout and Jim Anderson as a farm-hand. In 2014, Jay began working for the Shenandoah Fire Department as a Fire Truck Engineer. Again, he could drive any vehicle put in front of him…and now it was a fire truck.

Jay loved being a part of the Shenandoah Fire Department and appreciated all that the City had done for him and his family – especially in the past year and a half during his illness. He was self-taught in his many skills from mechanics to trucking to farming and also to carpentry work while renovating their home. Jay had the warm, friendly personality of “never knowing a stranger” and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

On Saturday, January 19, 2019, Jay peacefully passed away in his home surrounded by love from his family. He was preceded in death by his father Glendon Lindburg; and brothers-in-law, Tom Hohl and Skip Bayless. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Shari; son Evan; and mother Evelyn Lindburg, all of Shenandoah; sister Teena Hohl of Aurora, CO; sisters-in-law, Alice Mauer of Omaha, NE, Deb Nester and husband Rod of Clarinda, IA/Englewood, FL, and Jody Streitenberger and husband Denny of Shenandoah; many nieces and nephews; as well as extended family and friends.
