Jay Roberts Thueson passed away on Friday December 07, 2018. Jay was born April 1, 1936, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Jay Roberts and Beth Karla (Brown) Thueson. When he was a toddler, his family moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, where he attended school from elementary through high school.

Jay, who was always a sports lover, played basketball for Twin Falls High School, and won his “letter” there. After attending BYU for a year, Jay was called to serve in the Danish Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During his service there, Jay learned to love Denmark and its people.

After returning home from his mission, Jay joined the intelligence division of the National Guard, where he was placed in the linguistic unit. On March 29, 1961, he married Barbara Ann Hughey in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. Following their marriage, they established their home in Provo, where Jay returned to BYU, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1962.

After teaching junior high English for two years in Blackfoot, Idaho, Jay decided to earn a master’s degree from BYU, so the family moved to Salt Lake City where Jay taught English at Churchill Junior High School while he attended classes at BYU. He received a Master of Education degree from BYU in 1969. After 31 years of teaching English at Churchill, Jay retired in 1997.

Jay had several loves in his life. He loved his family, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he loved Denmark, he loved BYU sports, he loved our dog Pepper, and he loved serving in the LDS Temple, where he served for twenty-eight years. Jay was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Marcia, and Elaine, a sister-in-law.

Jay is survived by his wife, Barbara; by four children, Maribeth, Jeff (Kim), Janet (Rick), and Patricia (Jason); by nine grandchildren, Michael (Rylee), Matthew, Karlee, Aaron, Kentlee, Bryan (Chelsea), Jacob (Megan), Sam, and Erika; two great-grandchildren, Greyson and Elsie; two sisters, Karla (Tom) and Jennie; and a brother, Kenneth. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 22, 2018, at the Canyon Rim Stake Center, 3051 South 2900 East, Salt Lake City. There will be a viewing from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. with the funeral beginning at 11:00 a.m. There will be no viewing Friday night.

Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. The family wishes to thank the staff of Beehive Homes of Herriman and the hospice nurses and aides of Canyon Home Care and Hospice, all of whom cared for Jay with patience and compassion.
