Engeman, the daughter of Ted and Alma (Cook) Tenholder, was born July 31, 1934, in Montrose, Missouri and died at the age of 84 on March 22, 2019 in Appleton City, Missouri.
Joan was raised on the family farm east of Montrose, Missouri, graduated from St. Mary’s Elementary in Montrose and from St. Francis Academy High School in Nevada, Missouri. After high school, she worked at Sears & Roebuck in Kansas City until she married Alfred Engeman, a farmer from Montrose, Missouri on April 27, 1954. Al and Joan enjoyed life together, always using opportunities to instruct and pass on their Catholic faith by example.
On the farm they raised cattle, row crops and chickens, and every summer worked a large garden together with their children. Gardening provided enjoyment, the family working together and food that sustained the family throughout the year. Much of the bounty was canned to be enjoyed through the winter.
Al and Joan both served as leaders in 4-H and encouraged their children to learn many skills. Together they taught their children to work hard, and they were also very involved in Church and community, teaching dance lessons to teens in the Germantown St. Ludger’s Parish, serving as leaders in the Germantown Cloverleaf 4-H Club and many other activities. Joan was involved in the St. Ludger’s Altar Sodality and helped make many quilts over the years that were raffled off as part of the annual Labor Day Picnic.
Joan loved to stay busy, learn new things and give to the community. She was part of the Montrose Community Betterment Club for many years. She trained and became an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) in 1978 and then was one of the volunteers to drive the ambulance and go on emergency calls for the Clinton and Appleton City areas.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband Alfred, son Mike, and grandson Phillip, and brother Don. She is survived by her siblings: Florence of Washington, MO, Blanche (Ralph) Jurgensmeyer of Montrose, MO, Myrna), Judy (Steve) Steiger of Platte City, MO and Paul (Linda) Tenholder of Montrose, MO; Sister-in-law Myrna Tenholder of Montrose, MO; her children: Ted (Sharon Ross) of Clarksville, Tennessee, Sister Doris of Lawrence, Kansas, Bob (Donna Hergesheimer) of Appleton City, Cathy of Ballwin, Missouri; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
