JoAnne (Boyt) McCallum, 85, of Traverse City passed away January 23, 2019 at the Willow Cottages. Her family and friends visited and were able to say goodbye in the days preceding her passing. JoAnne was born on July 20, 1933 in Detroit to the late Fred Ewing and Lilian (Hills) Boyt.

On October 1, 1955, JoAnne married the love of her life, John (Jack) Burnard McCallum at St. Mathias Episcopal Church in Detroit. JoAnne earned her associates degree from Schoolcraft College in Livonia in English/Journalism. She attended Eastern Michigan University and Wayne State for additional Studies.

JoAnne was a probation officer for the city of Livonia and wrote for several local newspapers. She also worked for Crossroads of Michigan helping those in need with food, shelter and finances in Detroit. She and Jack retired to Northport and later moved to Traverse City.

She was a devoted member of Grace Episcopal Church and former member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Northport, St. John’s Episcopal church in Plymouth, St. Andrew’s church in Livonia and St. Mathias Episcopal Church in Detroit. In her free time she enjoyed sewing and reading. She also loved music, attending concerts and plays.

She and Jack enjoyed sailing on Grand Traverse Bay on their boat the “Fair Lass” in the summer with their children and grandchildren. She was also a self-described “rock hound”, amateur geologist and member of the Rock and Mineral Club of Michigan. JoAnne was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years in 2007, her parents, and her siblings Fred Boyt and Shirley Kroepel.

JoAnne is survived by her daughter Deborah (James) Schmittle of Williamsburg, VA; son John (Denise) McCallum of Northport; grandchildren Jennifer (Robert) Harrison, Melissa (Brian) VanHowe, Dylan and Catherine (Christopher Windle) Schmittle; and great granddaughter Abigail Grace Harrison. A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Traverse City, to celebrate JoAnne’s life in the spring. Memorial contributions in her honor may be directed to Grace Episcopal Church Traverse City, Mich.
