TRAVERSE CITY – Shirley Hott, 87, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, January 15th, 2019 at Munson Hospice House surrounded by loving family. Shirley was born on July 29, 1931 to parents Lawrence and Mamie Moore in Washington D.C. and the oldest of four sisters. After being raised and educated in Washington D.C., she became a resident of Traverse City for over fifty years.

She will be remembered for her warm personality, being good at whatever she put her mind to, and an unwavering perseverance, or as she liked to call it “stickability”. Shirley enjoyed her free time ball room dancing, Friday evenings spent at the Mackinaw Brew Company, where her name is forever etched in a plaque that still hangs today, shopping on Sunday mornings, and weekend trips to Mackinac Island. Her gift of a green thumb was evident in the love she had for her many gardens and participation in the Garden Club and Rose Society.

She was a Certified Master Gardener and loved to share her skills with everyone. Among other things, her holiday cooking will be missed, especially her St. Patrick’s Day brisket dinner and Christmas Treats. Most of all, her spirit for volunteering will not be soon forgotten, for her strength and care for others did more than money ever could.

Shirley worked for many years at the Health Department, providing services to Grand Traverse, Benzie and Leelanau Counties. She was one of the first volunteers of the Visitor’s Center and enjoyed every moment that she was there. Those left to honor her memory include her life companion Phil, her beloved son Michael (Dawn) Hott, Colleyville, Texas, her grandchildren Brandon, Justin, Matthew, Brooke and Adam.

Also surviving is her special friend Mary Melvin. She was preceded in death by her parents and her granddaughter Tiffany. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to The Garden Club in care of the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home; 305 Sixth Street, Traverse City, MI 49684, to leave a more lasting memory.

Please join the family from 1-2pm on Sunday January 20, 2019 at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home to share memories and visit. The family is being cared for by Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
