JOE ELDON SMITH, age 77, of New Holland, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 9:45 p.m. at the Select Specialty Hospital in Columbus. He was born on June 13, 1941 in Fayette County to George Denver and Lucy Ellen Hamilton Smith. He was a 1959 graduate of Greenfield McClain High School.

Joe had worked at Armco Steel for thirty-two years and then worked at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution as a Corrections Officer for ten years. He was a long time member at the First Baptist Church in Washington CH where he had served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. Joe was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother.

He enjoyed making people laugh and playing jokes, listening to music, going to Church, woodworking, fishing, and being with his family. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Robert Smith, Richard Smith, George Smith, Howard Smith, Gary Smith, Betty Jones, Sarah Glassner, Linda Smith, and Carolyn Thompson. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Lee Self Shipley Smith, whom he married on December 17, 1960; children, Pamela Jo (Patrick) Kuss of Springfield, Eldon Lee Smith of New Holland, and George Richard (India) Smith of New Holland; grandchildren, Ashley (Gary) Blancet of Springfield, Dakota Smith of New Holland, Alyssa (Justin) Massie of Springfield, and Allison Smith of New Holland; great-grandchildren, Zoey Mason, Bennett Massie, and three others arriving in 2019; brother, Darrell Dean (Mary Kay) Smith of Arizona; brothers-in-law, Richard (Virginia) Shipley, Aaron Sr. (Monica) Shipley, Terry Shipley, all of New Holland, and Jack Thompson of Washington CH; and sisters-in-law, Chelsea Smith, Jane Smith, Patsy Smith, and Jean Smith.

Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 301 E. East St., Washington CH, OH 43160, with Pastor Joe Current officiating. Family and friends may visit at the church on Saturday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.

In keeping with Joe’s wishes, cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Summers Funeral Home.
