John Christos Daoulas March 19, 1958 – January 28, 2019 Share this obituary Send Sympathy Gifts Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card John Christos Daoulas, 60, of Richmond, Virginia passed away on January 28, 2019 after a heroic two-and-a-half-year battle against bladder cancer. John led a rich multifaceted life as a successful engineer and a dedicated loving husband and father. John’s winning personality and positive outlook has left an indelible impression on family, friends and associates alike.

John is survived by his wife, Cheryl; daughter, Jennifer and significant other, Tyler Braxmeier; daughter, Danielle and her husband, Charles Slate; and daughter, Mary and her fiancé, John Wolf. John is also survived by his parents, Arthur and Elaine Daoulas, his two brothers and their families, and his two sisters-in-law and their families. John was born in Kitzingen, Germany on March 19, 1958, where his father was serving as a career Army officer.

He enjoyed being an “Army brat” with a vibrant mind that soaked up the rich experiences of living overseas and across the country. John earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Virginia Tech and went on to achieve a Master’s Degree in Engineering. It was at Virginia Tech that John met Cheryl (nee Stewart), his soul-mate for the next nearly thirty-five years.

John made his mark as a highly successful Geotechnical Engineer impacting the infrastructure (roads, bridges, tunnels, and buildings) across Virginia. He initially worked with Schnabel Engineering and ultimately as the Senior Project Delivery Engineer for Virginia Department of Transportation. Through innovation he developed many techniques and projects for the civil engineering industry.

He also was instrumental in the development and acceptance of the new design-build procurement process to be used by transportation agencies that would significantly reduce geo-engineering risk and costs. John was extremely dedicated to his family, friends, and community. A favorite pastime was as coach for his daughter’s soccer teams.

John coached women’s travel soccer for Pocoshock and Strikers league and changed the lives of many that he mentored. John was also a highly skilled craftsman who constantly worked on various construction projects at home and for friends and family. John leaves a strong legacy of a well-rounded person whose good will and strong personality will be reflected in those that knew him.

A service will be held in remembrance of John at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral (30 Malvern Avenue, Richmond, VA 23221) on Thursday, January 31, 2019 with viewing starting at 2:00 pm and service at 3:00 pm. There will also be a reception following the service at Willow Oaks Country Club at 6228 Forest Hill Ave, Richmond, VA 23225 all are welcome to attend and food will be provided. In lieu of flowers the family would welcome a donation to the American Bladder Cancer Society (donatenow.networkforgood.org/ABLCS ) in memory of John Daoulas.
