Age 79, on Friday, October 5, 2018. Father Reiss, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was born February 12, 1939 to the late Joseph and Emma (Wolf) Reiss. There, he attended St. Martin Elementary and High Schools.

He attended Immaculate Conception College in Troy, N.Y., where he earned a bachelor-of-arts degree. He also earned a master-of-science degree from Fordham University in N.Y. and completed seminary studies at Mount Alverna Seminary in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., and Washington Theological Consortium in Washington, D.C. Father Reiss was ordained as a member of the Franciscan Friars of the province of the Immaculate Conception (New York) on May 24, 1969, by Bishop John McShea. He was incardinated as a priest of the Diocese of Youngstown in September 2001.

Prior to coming to Youngstown, Father Reiss served as a high school chaplain, religion teacher, guidance counselor, retreat master, and pastoral associate. From 1970-1973 he taught religion at Cardinal Mooney High School and served as weekend Mass presider at St. Paul, New Middletown, Our Lady of Lourdes, East Palestine, St. Patrick, Leetonia and SS Cyril and Methodius parishes. In 1993, he was appointed a member of the staff of the Shrine of Our Lady, Comforter of the Afflicted in Youngstown.

In 2002, he was appointed pastor of Holy Name Parish in addition to Our Lady of Hungary Parish both in Youngstown. Father Reiss retired March 1, 2006. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters Anna Mae Schmalz and Mary M. Reiss.

Father Reiss is survived by his sisters Mary Zorn, Catherine Herman, Elizabeth Klemmer, Julia Mayer, Clare Donehue and his brother Edward Reiss. A calling hour will be held at the Ascension Worship Site of St. Philip Parish, 114 Berry Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15205, on Wednesday, October 10 from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial that will be celebrated for Father John Reiss, at 11 a.m. Interment in St. Martin Cemetery.
