Obituary for JOHN GEORGE ZANETTI Print John George ‘Socko’ Zanetti, 80, of Mitchell St., Gwinn, passed away early Friday morning, February 8, 2019 at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans. John was born March 31, 1938 in Gwinn to John C. and Carmen M. (Valenti) Zanetti and graduated from Gwinn High School, Class of 1956. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam Era from 1961-63.

Following his service to his country, John was employed by Cleveland Cliffs at the Tilden Mine prior to working for Marquette County as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1998 with 32 years of service with the County. Mr. Zanetti was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Gwinn and the National Rifle Association. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at the family hunting camp in Arnold.

He also enjoyed working on cars. Surviving are his loving wife of 53 years, Sandra (Peterson) Zanetti; three daughters: Natalie (Robert) Dhamers of Marquette, Suzanne (Joseph) Macario of Princeton and Gina (Paul) Wilson of Skandia; grandchildren: Andrew (Elissa Beacco) and Bradley Macario, Kayla Dhamers and Neo Wilson; brother, Dennis (Barbara) Zanetti of Texas; brother-in-law, John (Susan) Erickson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Julie Erickson; and an infant brother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon on Thursday, February 14th at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Rev. Allen Mott officiating. Interment will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery.

The family will greet relatives and friends in the Baraga Room at St. Anthony’s from 10:30 am until the time of Mass at 12:00 noon, and also at a luncheon in the church hall immediately following. Pallbearers will be John’s grandsons and sons-in-law. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in his memory to the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans Memory Care Unit.
