John H. Cathcart, age 96, of New Bethlehem, passed away early Friday morning, November 2, 2018 at the Armstrong County Memorial Hospital in Kittanning. Born May 14, 1922 in Rimersburg, he was a son of the late Lawrence W. and Audrey Wagner Cathcart. John was a WW II veteran, serving from December 1942 to March 1946 in the United States Army.

On January 16, 1947, he married the former L. Noreen Brinker. Together, they celebrated 71 years of marriage. John worked as a plant and service supervisor for Columbia Gas.

After 39 years with the company, he retired in 1986. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of New Bethlehem for 54 years and sang in the church choir. He was also a member of the NBC Chorus and the Walter W. Craig American Legion Post #354 of New Bethlehem.

John was a Boy Scout troop leader and hunter’s safety instructor for many years. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid golfer and baseball/softball player. Survivors include his wife, Noreen; daughter, Diana Brinkley and her husband, Ed, of Pittsburgh and two sons: Michael Cathcart and his wife, Susan, of Mt.

Wolf and Jeffrey Cathcart and his wife, Sue, of Peachtree City, Georgia. John is also survived by seven grandchildren: Doug Brinkley and his wife, Michelle; Derek Brinkley and his wife, Katie, Brett Cathcart, Ashley Cathcart, Lauren Cathcart, Erin Cathcart and Olivia Cathcart; five great grandchildren: Mia, Brady, Ella, Kylie and Josie Brinkley; one sister, Lois Campbell and her husband, DelRoy, of Massillon, Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by five sisters: Dorothy Boyer, Ethel Eberhart, Louise Burford, Alice Leavens and Barbara Cathcart and four brothers: Merle Wagner, Don Cathcart, Robert Cathcart and Preston Cathcart.

Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, November 5, 2018 at the Rupert Funeral Home and Cremation Service chapel, 233 Penn Street, New Bethlehem. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 6, 2018 in the First United Methodist Church, 234 Penn Street, New Bethlehem, with Pastor Bud Davis officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the church by the Walter W. Craig American Legion Post #354 of New Bethlehem.

Memorial contributions may be given in the name of John H. Cathcart to the First United Methodist Church, 234 Penn Street, New Bethlehem, PA 16242. Interment will follow in the Squirrel Hill Cemetery, Porter Township, Clarion County. Online condolences may be sent to John’s family at www.
