OBITUARY John “Johnny” Edward Miller Sr. November 1, 1946 – November 3, 2018 O Captain! My Captain! Rise up and hear the bells; Rise up – for you the flag is flung – for you the bugle trills, For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths – for you the shores a-crowding, For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; John Edward Miller, Sr. age 72, of Poplarville, MS (originally from Chalmette, LA) passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, MS.
Affectionately known as Johnny, he was born on June 15, 1946 in New Orleans, LA to Elmira Stinson and Paul Miller, who both precede him in death. Johnny proudly served as an Airborne Army Ranger and honorably retired by disability following the Vietnam War, during which time he received a Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze service star, Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with device (1960), Expert Badge with machine Gun Bar with Rifle Bar and Parachutist Badge – Basic. He served with the 2nd of the 8th Company C and was 1/8th Battalion Jumping Mustangs.
Following his selfless service to our great Nation, Johnny graduated from Holy Cross College with a degree in History. Continuing his life of service, Johnny retired from the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Department where he held the rank of Captain. He belonged to Dominique You Lodge #468 F. & A.M. and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars as well as the Disabled American Veterans Creole State #11.
Johnny had many interests some of which included family history, genealogy, metal detecting and treasure hunting. These interests contributed to Johnny authoring Treasure in Louisiana. A Treasure Hunter’s Guide to the Bayou State, which is still available on re-release.
In addition to his parents, Johnny is preceded in death by his younger brothers, Paul Daniel (Danny) Miller, Sr. and Marcus Joe Miller; as well as his loving grandmother, Marcus Joe Stinson (Dinky). Sadly, Johnny was also preceded in death by his eldest child, Angel Miller. Johnny is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Carmel Lovoi Miller as well as his sons, Johnny Miller, Jr., Jason Miller and daughter Stephanie Miller, also step-sons, Donald Larabell and Michael Larabell and step-daughter, Pamela Vega.
Additionally blessed in life, Johnny has 8 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, many great grandchildren, step-great grandchildren, many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, service men and women. It was a difficult summer for Johnny and now he’s at rest in Heaven together with those who went before him. He will always be loved and missed by all who knew him.
