John Lee Morton was born on October 16, 1942 in Sprott, Alabama, to the late Rozell and Rosie Lee (Rutledge) Morton. On September 11, 2018, God came and gently took him home to rest on His wings of love from this life at the Parkview Regional Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana. John attended Lincoln High School in Marion, Alabama.

During this time, he met Annie Helen Jones by association of his brother-in-law Pastor and friend Charles Jemison. They later married on July 3, 1964. John left Alabama to pursue a better life for his new family, after he secured a home in the Bronx and a job in New York City he sent for his wife and newly born daughter, Evelyn to join him.

He was baptized at an early age. He attended church at Bethany Baptist Church and later he and his growing family worshipped at Friendly Baptist Church. John Lee worked tirelessly as a Chef to support his family.

He worked at a restaurant called the Boathouse and at the Red Roof Inn. As time went on and his family increased with two more children (Deborah and John Jr.) he moved on to pursue a different career and became a city school bus driver with MAJ Transit. After living in the Bronx for 25 years John Lee and his wife decided to move to Hackensack, New Jersey where they resided for three years and after visiting Charleston, South Carolina several times, they decided to buy their first house there and spent the next 14 years there.

Upon settling there John Lee gained employment as a Sanitation Driver with the City of Charleston receiving many awards for his many years of service and Outstanding Employee. John Lee also received the Governor’s Certificate for faithful service to the State of South Carolina and other accolades over the years of his working career. In 2006 as he entered his retirement years, at the request of his wife they moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana to be closer to her family.

Throughout his life John Lee enjoyed participating in sports, however his greatest passion was fishing and gardening. He was a loyal fan of the New York Knicks and the New York Mets. He enjoyed spending time with his beautiful wife Annie, as they traveled spending time with their children and grandchildren; the racetrack and casino; every milestone birthday and graduation.

John Lee touched many lives and will greatly be missed. He was a great husband, father, Godfather, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
