Obituary for John Martin “Walt” Peterson John M. “Walt” Peterson, 73, of Fort Dodge, died Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home. A service honoring John’s life will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Gunderson Funeral Chapel. Military honors will be presented by V.F.W. Post No.

1856 and the Iowa Army National Guard. The family will greet friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. John is survived by his wife Lynette; his children, Andrea Cloud and Chad Peterson; four grandchildren, Taylor, Nicole, Lily and C.J.; one great grandson Aiden; and his siblings, Eleanor Halligan, William Peterson, Karol Holmes, Margaret McDermott, Jim Peterson, Olive Cooper, Mary Vonnahme and Don Peterson.

He was preceded by his parents, his brother Tanner Peterson and his sister Karen Bruce. John Martin Peterson, the son of Tanner and Malvina (McLaughlin) Peterson, was born November 17, 1944, in Fort Dodge. He grew up on the family farm near Moorland and attended schools at Moorland.

John served in the United States Army and was discharged in 1967. In 1968, John was united in marriage to Lynette Griffel at the Vincent United Methodist Church. The couple lived in Minneapolis where John attended Dunwoody Institute and received his training in automotive repair.

They lived in Mason City for a short time before returning to Fort Dodge. He worked for Tom Kelly Ford and then purchased and operated Walt’s Frame & Alignment, later becoming Walt’s Auto. John enjoyed fishing, going camping with his family and friends and tube excursions down rivers.
