John Peter Amodio passed from this earth on Monday, February 25th, 2019. He was born on Wednesday, July 27th, 1960. John was a native of New Britain, lived in Farmington for just over a decade and then Kensington for the past several years.
The son of the late Ada Coppola Amodio and Louis G. Amodio, Sr., he was a beautiful baby boy with a head of bright blond hair and blue eyes, and a face with a huge smile, that was infectious. As a young boy he spent many happy days growing up in the Belvedere section of town, and enjoyed spending time with his family at the home of his maternal grandparents Emilio and Hilda Coppola who lived near by. A very bright child who developed a challenge with epilepsy and which he dealt with his entire life.
During his teen years he attended the Kolburne School in New Marlborough, MA. There he was mentored by the schools founders, Sidney and Jean (Kolburne) Weinstein. He flourished at the school, set in the bucolic hillside of western Massachusetts.
There he made friends he kept for a lifetime, and received love and care from compassionate educators. Upon returning home he attended and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas. After high school he joined his siblings and father in work at the family’s business, Amodio Moving & Storage.
At work he excelled in telemarketing, which came easily to him as he had an outgoing personality, and was supported and loved by the loyal workers at the company. During these years he became an avid Hartford Whalers fan, never forgiving the team’s management for moving to the Carolinas. He collected hockey memorabilia, and it adorned his home.
He loved to attend movies with his devoted friend of many years, Donald From, who was more brother, than friend. During the summer months he spent a great deal of time at the family cottage in Old Saybrook, where his mom loved to throw parties for the extended family. He was active in the New Britain Lions, UNICO National and the Epilepsy Foundation of America.
In 1998 he lost his mother to cancer and he and his dad became constant companions. They traveled often, and were inseparable, spending more and more time at the beach where you could often find both Lou and Johnnie sound asleep on the front porch basked in the glow of the setting sun reflecting off the ocean. John retired from the family business in 2008 when his father passed away.
John Peter leaves behind numerous friends and is survived by his siblings; Frank E. Amodio, Sr. and his wife Jane, Lenore T. Amodio-Gregory and her husband Paul, and Gerry Amodio and his wife Lisa. Also his uncle and aunt, John A. and Emma Amodio. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews and several grand nieces and nephews; and his cousins from the Coppola, Fisco and Amodio families, especially Carol Battaline White, with whom he was very close.
We will all miss his smiling face and his deep and thunderous laugh, but find joy in knowing that he is reunited with his beloved mother and father in heaven. His entire family would like to thank the multitudes of people that opened their hearts to Johnnie, befriended him, looked out for him and made his life just a little bit more joyful every day. None of us can know the plan God lays for us, or why for some that path is ripe with challenge, but in those moments where we think that we have it harder than anyone else, let us see the others that have it just a little bit harder than we do.
Services for John Peter Amodio will be held with calling hours at the Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain, CT 06051 on Wednesday, February 27th from 5:00PM-7:00PM. His funeral will on Thursday, February 28th starting at the funeral home at 8:30AM then proceeding to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1755 Stanley Street, New Britain, CT for a 9:30AM mass.
