Joseph D. Variot, 91, of Mancelona, passed away on May 10, 2019 at his home. Joe was born on November 22, 1927, in Detroit, the son of Joseph and Elcie (Gossett) Variot. Joe served in the U.S. Navy for 13 years and was former commander of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets.

He served in World War II and Korea. He spent time coming to Mancelona for many years prior to moving permanently over 20 years ago. He was a member of the Alba United Methodist Church, Mancelona Moose Lodge # 2254, Elk Rapids AMVETS, American Legion in Mancelona as well as the Central Lake VFW.

In his spare time he enjoyed coin collecting, fishing and hunting. Prior to moving to Mancelona he was active in the Detroit area. He worked for the City of Detroit Civic Center, and the Symphony Orchestra as a ticket director.

He is survived by 4 children, Michael (Beatriz) Variot of Seebrook, TX, Joseph (Susan) Variot of Mancelona, Leslie Hamilton of Traverse City, Matthew Variot, 7 grandchildren, Crystal Edwards, Joseph (Beverly) Variot, Samantha Variot, Jessica Variot, Jacob Hamilton, Infinity Variot, Eternity Variot, 5 great-grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter, 2 half- brothers, Jody Variot of Roswell, NM, James Variot of Bradenton, FL, and a half sister Julie Variot of Aurora, CO. He was preceded in death by a daughter Denise Variot, 4 wives, 2 brothers, Donald and Richard Variot, sister Diane LaDuke and a great-grandson James Edwards. Funeral services will take place on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with military honors immediately following also at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services at 1:00 p.m. Friday. Burial will be at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona. Memorial contributions may be made to AMVETS Post 114, P.O. Box 144, Elk Rapids, MI, 49629 or to Munson Hospice.
