OBITUARY Joseph DiCosmo June 30, 1920 – October 2, 2018 Joseph DiCosmo, 98, retired Board of Education of the City of New York Assistant Principal, veteran of World War II, and Golden Gloves boxer died peacefully in his sleep on Oct. 2, 2018. Joe was born on June 30, 1920, in Calitri, Italy, and came to America at age 6.

He married the love of his life, Theresa Balbi, in 1952. U. S. Army Corporal Joseph DiCosmo served as a foreign language interpreter for Italian prisoners of war, and pursued his love of learning through his education, becoming a teacher and later Assistant Principal Of Edwin Markham Jr. High School. Joe attended Wagner College on full scholarship from the Police Athletic League and earned two masters degrees; in foreign languages from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., and in Education from City College.

Joe was an enthusiastic participant in sports throughout his life, and at the age of 17 became the first Staten Islander to box at Madison Square Garden in the Golden Gloves. Joe adored his wife, Theresa DiCosmo, throughout her life until she passed away on Oct. 2, 2014.

They built a wide circle of lifelong friends, to travel with and have many laughs with. Joe is survived by his daughter, Linda DiCosmo; son, JosephDiCosmo, and three grandchildren, Laura, Lynette, and Larissa DiCosmo. He is also survived by his beautiful sisters, Mary DeMaio and Rose Menditto, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 5, 2018, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Harmon Funeral Home. Prayer Service is Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Harmon.
