Joseph’s Obituary On Friday, January 18, 2019, Joseph (“Joe”) P. Dymond, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, from complications following treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Born February 9, 1965, in Latrobe, PA, he was the son of William T. and Philomena Dymond. He was the husband of 25 years to his high school and life-long best friend Maureen Erny Dymond of Brookeville, MD, and the proud father of two children, Madison Lynn Dymond and Jose Manuel Dymond, both of Brookeville, MD.
In addition to his parents, spouse and children, Joe is survived by his sister, Michele Heacox (Robert) of Lutherville, MD, his brother, William T. Dymond, Jr., (Jennifer) of Winter Park, FL, and his sister, Lynn Hutchinson of Woolford, MD. He is also survived by six nieces and nephews: Michael Dymond of Orlando, FL, Jenna Dymond of Dallas, TX, Rachel Heacox of Dallas, TX, Corinne Dymond of Raleigh, NC, Ryan Heacox of Weehawken, NJ, and Helen Hutchinson of Woolford, MD. Mr. Dymond graduated from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA, in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.
He received a Master of Science from The Pennsylvania State University in 1994 and a Master of Natural Science from Louisiana State University (LSU) in 1999 where he also did his doctoral studies. Joe was a lifelong teacher and a formal educator for more than 23 years beginning in 1995 as a professor, teaching world regional geography in the Department of Geography and Anthropology at LSU. In 2000 he became an Assistant Professor of Geography and Director of Geographic Undergraduate Studies at George Washington University (GWU).
Mr. Dymond received many accolades and awards throughout his career including being honored by GWU: in 2006 with a Morton A. Bender Teaching Award for instructional excellence; in 2010 with a GWU Service Excellence “Student Choice” Award; in 2012 with the Writing in the Disciplines Distinguished Teaching Award; and in 2013 with an appointment to the GW Academy of Distinguished Teachers. He co-authored Contemporary World Regional Geography: Global Connections and Local Voices , an award winning geography textbook published by McGraw-Hill Higher Education now in its 4th edition, and Essentials of World Regional Geography , an issue-based geography text currently in its 3rd edition. Mr. Dymond was fluent in Spanish and loved to travel.
He traveled extensively, visiting 28 countries throughout Europe, Latin America, North America, Africa and Southeast and Southwest Asia. Joe was an avid skier and hiker (having successfully climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro), a lover of craft beer, music, movies and an ardent reader.
A “foodie,” he enjoyed cooking as much as eating. He loved family and friends above all and will be deeply and dearly missed. His funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Parish, 2900 Olney-Sandy Springs Road, Olney, MD.
A reception to celebrate Joe’s life will follow, with specific location to be provided.
