Josephine S. Ross was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 19, 1930. She departed this life on October 12, 2018. She was preceded in death by parents Deacon Enis Hartley and Mary E. Hartley, husband Howard Ross, Sr., daughter Bernice J. Lee Walker, (5) sisters: Dorothy (John) Page, Esther (William) Russell, Ruth A. (Celias) Grant , Mattie (Ralph) Yellets, Louise (Harold) Carroll, (1) grandson, James Comer and others.

Josephine was the middle child of seven girls. She was a member of Willoway Baptist Church, Braddock, Pa. She professed Christ at the age of 12 and was baptized.

She was active in church choir, programs and nursing. She was always busy. In 1963 she moved to Gary, IN and joined Tarrytown M. B. Church under Rev.

J. D. Henderson and was very active as a people person. She taught Sunday School Vacation Bible School, Pastor’s Aide, Assistant Administrator of Church Day Care Center, Home Mission, Graduate of M. D. T. Business School, American Bible Institute, Notary Public, Continuing Education, Nursing Home Administration for the Aging, Licensed Foster Parent, Community Activist, Block President, AA Liberal Arts of St Joseph Campus, Calumet College & Retired Office Administrator Supervisor of Calumet College, Executive Director Grand Calumet Task Force, Finance, Food Commodity Staff, “Poetess”. Under the late Pastor Charles Parker and present Pastor Willie L. Joyner was Mission Ministry President and also Nurse Ministry President, Household of Ruth #5840 of Grand United Order of Odd Fellows of America and it Jurisdiction, Order of Eastern Stars, Local Church Baptist District Association and Second Vice President of the Northern Indiana District Association Nurses Ministry of Indiana.

She was involved herself in many things so after 20 years 3 months of service as church secretary she decided to retire. She was given Mission Ministry President Emeritus and Nursing Ministry Emeritus plaques. She moved back to Pennsylvania (her birth state to join and find all her relatives.

On November 11, 2006, she said goodbye to Gary, Indiana and Hello to Pennsylvania where she joined Unity Baptist Church under Pastor Richard Wingfield. She regularly attended Sunday School, Bible Studies and Church which she always loved and other activities until she was injured. Her motto was, “Let my works speak for me”.

She returned to Indiana in February 2014 and rejoined Tarrytown Missionary Baptist Church. Josephine leaves to cherish her loving memories (2) daughters; Dr. Ernestine (Calvin) Johnson, Sheryl Anne Badgett of Indiana; (3) sons, William (Kathryn) Ross, Georgia; Lawrence Ross of Florida; Howard M. Ross, Jr. of Texas.
