Josephine Anne “JoAnne” Meyer, 86, of Bernard, Iowa passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at Stonehill Care center. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Holy Family Church, Peosta, with Fr. Richard Kuhn officiating.

Burial will follow at Mount Olivet cemetery. A parish wake service and rosary will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2019 at Holy Family Church followed by visitation from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visitation will also begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Holy Family Church until time of service. Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd.

Dubuque is assisting the family. JoAnne was born on August 6, 1932 in White Lake, SD the daughter of Henry and Ludwina (Bertsch) Schiffer. After the family moved to Iowa she attended grade school at Saint Lawrence Otter Creek until 4th grade and then went to one room schools until starting High School in Maquoketa and finishing High School at Dubuque Senior High School in 1950.

After high school she worked for Bell Telephone Co. On January 12, 1952 she married Merlin J. Meyer at Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Dubuque and together they shared almost 58 years until Merlin’s death on December 7, 2009. She devoted her life to being a full time wife and mother to her six children, and was known far and wide for her infamous Texas Cake and homemade chocolate Chip Cookies. She was a member of Holy Rosary Society, the ACCW, the Catholic Daughters of America Court 1287, the Theresians, the Dubuque Saddle Club, the Tri-State saddle Club and her two card clubs.

She is survived by her two daughters Dianne (Jeff) Reiter of Cascade, and Donna (Jim) Burright of Ankeny, Iowa, her two sons Duane (Laura) Meyer of LaMotte and Dale (Lisa) Meyer of Bernard, a daughter-in-law Darlene Meyer of Cascade, 26 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild, her sister Marie Weiland and sisters-in-law Leona Schiffer and Sally Schiffer all of Dubuque, Phyliss Schiffer of Milwaukee, Marie Noonan of Cascade and Doris (Gerald) Kutsch of Waukesha, WI. She was preceded in death by her husband Merlin, a son Dennis in 2009, a daughter Darlys Stoeffler in 2015, a son-in-law Gerald Stoeffler in 2017, her parents, and siblings Loretta (Orville) Veach, Rose Schiffer at birth, Ella Mae (Robert) Bray, Hazel Schiffer, Charles (Emma) Schiffer, Walter (Virginia) Schiffer, Alvin Schiffer, Victor Schiffer, Elmer Schiffer, Henry Schiffer and her in-laws Virginia (Raymond) Heiar, LaVerne Meyer and Willard Noonan. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of River Bend, Stonehill and Hospice of Dubuque for all the great care they gave to JoAnne.
