Joyce Holcombe passed away on June 22, 2018. Joyce was born in Fayetteville, West Virginia on January 9, 1930 and spent her next 18 years growing up in that same town with her four brothers and sisters. Shortly after graduating from Fayetteville High School in 1948, Joyce packed her bags and boarded a train for Washington, DC where she went to work as a clerk typist at the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

She would reside in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area for the next 70 years. While working at the FBI Joyce met special agent Bob Holcombe and the two were soon married remaining so for the next 48 years until his death in 2003 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Joyce and Bob had three children, Steve Holcombe and Sue Loflin both of Greensboro, NC and Barbara Phelan of Rockville, Md.

Joyce also had nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In addition to raising Steve, Sue and Barbara, Joyce also found time to re-enter the work force back in 1970 as an office administrator for the Division of Nursing at Health and Human Services. While working at this division their group was successful in establishing the role of a nurse practitioner as a qualified primary care provider with a requirement to complete a master’s degree to become certified.

Joyce eventually retired from that position in 1985 having worked a total of 20 years for the United States Government. After Joyce and Bob retired they had the chance to travel throughout the United States as well as Europe, the British Isles and the Caribbean Islands. They also spent many weekends at their favorite getaway – Bethany Beach, Delaware.

Joyce and the family were members of Christ Episcopal Church in Kensington for over 20 years. In her spare time Joyce was an avid reader, a Washington Redskins fan and most importantly enjoyed keeping up with the lives of her children, grandkids and great grandchildren. Visitation will be at Inter-Faith Chapel, 3680 S. Leisure World, Blvd.

, Silver Spring, MD on Friday, June 29 from 10:30 until 11:00 am with Funeral Service at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association ( www.
