Joyce Maxine Carter, 87, of High Hill, passed away on May 6, 2019 at the New Florence Nursing Home. She was born on August 2, 1931 in Mexico, Missouri, a daughter of Arthur Barnes & Flossie Mae (Dixon) Carter. In 1949 she graduated as salutatorian of her class from the New Florence High School.

While in school she was a class officer and participated in plays. After High School she moved to Hermann and was employed at the court house. Later on she moved to Arizona where she was a restaurant owner and also went to school to become a florist.

She then moved back to New Florence where she worked at the Title Company in Montgomery City and for the City Hall in New Florence. Her hobbies were crocheting, cake decorating, floral arranging, jewelry making and gardening. Her passion was her extensive collection of costume jewelry that was acquired over the course of many years.

Joyce is survived by her brother and sisters; Sidney Carter & wife Layna, of Columbia, Missouri; Carol Worley, of New Florence, Missouri; Barbara Sturart & husband Sidney, of Holt Summit, Missouri; Nina Edmunds, of High Hill, Missouri; Phyllis Gonas & husband Bob, of New York; Mary Crouch & husband Bob, of Mineola, Missouri; and Gayl Cuno, of Florida; by sisters-in-law, Ruthie Kivet, of Indiana; Vera Carter, of New Florence, Missouri; Wanda Carter, of Troy, Missouri; and Barb Carter, of Kirksville, Missouri; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Bill Carter, Emory “Lee” Carter, David Carter, infant Darell Carter, and Kenneth Carter, by sister-in-law, Jacqueline Carter, and brothers-in-law, Dave Worley, Andy Edmunds, Fred Cuno, and Jim Hollomon. Visitation will be held Saturday, May 11th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Toedtmann & Grosse Funeral Home, New Florence, where funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at New Florence Cemetery.
