Obituary of Julia Trainor Julia Marie Trainor “Judy Trainor,” 89, of Brookfield, wife of the late Thomas P. Trainor, Jr., died at Danbury Hospital on Saturday, April 21, 2018. She was born in the Bronx on November 14, 1928, daughter of the late Ernest and Bertha (Mariner) Baumeister. She was also predeceased by her stepmother, Bessie Smith; her uncle, W. Phillip Mariner and his wife, Anna, who helped to raise her, along with aunts and uncles with whom she made her home while growing up.
She was a longtime parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Brookfield, was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and of the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department, and for many years volunteered at the town’s Senior Center. Judy harnessed her talents and passions throughout life by pursuing careers that encompassed these. Working as a Switchboard Operator allowed her to talk and be paid for it, which was ironically reinforced by her license plate ending in the letters GAB.
Working at a friend’s farm caring for horses allowed her to share her love for animals – a love also shared with years of dogs and cats in her home. Her life shifted to the role of a Wife and Mother, and she tirelessly performed the tasks and pleasures involved, keeping a family close and taken care of. Sundays and Holidays were of utmost importance to her.
People enjoyed her cheesecakes, lemon merengue pies, homemade sauce, and stuffing, and knew that there was always room for one more at her table – providing you were willing to wash dishes or take out the trash. After the death of her husband in 1974, she once again employed her skills, working at The Stony Hill Inn and The Quality Inn. She also worked at Grolier.
Later she became the Receptionist at the Academy of Dance Arts, where her bright smile, big heart, and connection with kids helped to earn her the nickname, Grandma Judy. She would say that there were a lot of names people called her, but this was her favorite. Her ‘studio family’ was dear to her and even at the end when she could no longer be present, she seemed to instinctively know the schedule of events.
Her family is grateful to those who spent time visiting her and sitting with her over the last few months, and especially in this last week. The love that has been shared back with her is immeasurable and irreplaceable. Judy will be sadly missed by her two sons, Thomas P. Trainor III (his wife Sue), and James W. Trainor; her daughter, Doreen Rafferty (her husband, Richard); her granddaughter, Chelsea Trainor (her fiancé Michael Tomaino); and her great grandson, Bryton; as well as many cousins and extended family.
All will miss her ‘sweet tooth’, not just for her love of cookies and ice cream, but for her love of life. No matter what day to day life brought her, she took it on with a smile, a wink, a thank you and a wish for the best in life – placing her footprint on everyone’s heart. The family will receive friends at the Brookfield Funeral Home, 786 Federal Road, Brookfield, on Wednesday April 25th between the hours of 5:00 and 8:00pm, and Thursday morning between 9:00 and 10:00am.
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Thursday, April 26th at 10:30am at St. Joseph Church, Brookfield. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Hastings on Hudson, NY on Friday. .
