June’s Obituary June Irene Best, age 92, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of John and Minnie (Junker) Groeneveld on October 1, 1926, in Aplington. June attended country school and graduated from Aplington High School in 1944. She then attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls.

In 1945 to 1947, June taught in German Township #5, then in Pleasant Valley Township #2. On June 25, 1947, June was united in marriage with Howard William Best in the home of her parents. The couple made their home on her parents’ farm south of Aplington until 1974.

At that time, they moved to a farm east of her parents’ place where they built a new home. June helped with the work on the farm and lovingly took care of her family. In 1993, they retired and moved into Aplington.

June was an active member of Aplington Presbyterian Church. She served in various roles in the church including playing the piano for Sunday School and directing the junior choir. June enjoyed gardening, canning and sewing for her family.

She served on the Grundy County Extension Committee and on the Election Board for Grundy and Butler Counties. June and Howard enjoyed traveling to all 50 states. They also were able to take a trip to Europe on a farm tour and visited their foreign exchange student who stayed with them from 1976 to 1977.

June died Thursday, February 28, 2019, at Maple Manor Village in Aplington. She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Howard on June 16, 2009; her parents; a brother, Henry (Lila) Groeneveld; a sister, Verna (Mervin)Best; and a sister-in-law, Marian Brouwer. June is survived by four daughters, Virginia (Alan) Jansen of Omaha, Nebraska; Carol (Rick) Leib of Ankeny, Iowa; Eileen (Alan) Spree of Parkersburg, Iowa and Sheila (Dennis) Harms of Aplington, Iowa; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Wallace Brouwer, of Aplington.

Funeral Services will be 3:00 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2019, at the Aplington Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Aplington. Visitation and time of fellowship will be held at the church following the service until 5:30 p.m.. Memorials may be directed to the family.
