OBITUARY Karen Spurling Steele August 24, 1947 – October 20, 2018 Karen Spurling Steele went to be with Her Lord on October 20, 2018. She was born in Cleveland County, NC on August 24, 1947. Karen served with CMS as a teacher, mentor, and Supervisor of Math for 35 years.

She was also a Teacher in Resident at UNCC for three years and was involved with the University of Hawaii in an innovative new approach of teaching algebra. She was invited to state, national, and international math conferences to share her expertise. When she retired, she was the Supervisor for Mathematics for CMS.

Karen was a member of Mint Hill Baptist Church for over 25 years. In 2006, she moved to Maggie Valley, NC with her husband, to enjoy her retirement. She is currently a member of First Baptist of Maggie Valley.

Karen was predeceased by her parents, W.B. and Myrtle Spurling; and son, Jeffery Steele. Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Jimmie Steele; daughter, Kelly Steele Dreher (Carl) ; sister, Shirley Edwards (Newell); nephews, Tracy and Troy Edwards; grandchildren, Tyler Jenkins (Kyla), Braden Asbury (Sarah), and Jonathan Dreher and Alicia Dreher. The celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 pm Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at Sunset Memory Gardens on Lawyers Road in Mint Hill.

The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to MemoryCare, 81 Elmwood Way, Waynesville, NC 28786.
