UTICA – Mrs. Katherine M. “Kathy” (Nicotera) Aubain, age 90, went home to Heaven when she passed away on Monday, January 7, 2019. Born in Utica on December 14, 1928, Katherine was the daughter of the late Salvatore and Agnes (Perin) Nicotera. She was a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School.
At one time, she was married to Kenneth N. Thompson. She entered into a second union on April 15, 1961 when she wed Fernando “Tony” Aubain. They were an outgoing couple who shared a common love and the blessing of children.
Although they were separated for numerous years, at the very end they were in each other’s heart. Kathy was an attentive mother and wife who cared for her home for many years, a majority of which were spent in Stanton, California where she and Tony owned and operated the Aubain Appliance Repair Company. Kathy worked as the bookkeeper for their business.
She was a dependable, determined woman, and she took advantage of technology. She was someone you could count on, especially in a time of need. She lived a productive life and carried out her goals, always counting on the Holy Spirit to guide her.
Kathy made everyone in her life feel important and more secure, and she had an enduring love, loyalty, understanding, and trust for her loved ones. She tried to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative through her loving actions. No matter where she resided, Kathy found a holy place of worship and volunteered to teach faith formation classes in numerous churches over the years.
Her home parish was St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. A truly forgiving soul, she always wanted to have her family united and in accord.
She was firmly planted in her love of the Lord and focused on prayers, Mass, and her Christian beliefs. She never wavered in her faith. Kathy was a fabulous cook and traditional baker, talents that honored and upheld her Italian heritage.
She took great joy in decorating and preparing for wonderful holiday celebrations which were so memorable. During her spare time, she enjoyed reading, playing bingo, crocheting, and creating hand-crafted cards for special occasions…. of which she never forgot anyone’s special day.
She was most proud of being a caring mother, and becoming a grandma was one of her greatest pleasures. She knew each grandchild by heart. When her great-grandchildren came along, they were her “pride and joy”.
She was overjoyed by those babies. Katherine is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John T. and Jennifer Aubain; her daughter, Toni-Marie Aubain and Danny; grandchildren, Jillian, Jenna, and Jeanette; James, Kyle, Tahlyssa “Sissy”, Justyn, Naythen, Nycco, and Kathleen (the perfect name for her); great-grandchildren, Coby Shane, Isabellah Rose, D.J., Sophia, Cilas, and Rowan; her sister, Carmela Dee; and brother and sister-in-law, John B. and Ruth Nicotera. She also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews, Richard J. “Rick” Nicotera, Mary Theresa and Eric Hallstead, Barbara and “her darling” Dave Deacle, and Kathleen “Dee” (her namesake) and James Dailey, Rob and Lynne Nicotera; Alan and Debbie Dee; Joe Dee; John and Julie Dee; Sharon Dee; Anne and Greg Maydan; and Jim and Denise Nicotera; great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
She kept in close touch with her family, Madeline Dyer, Joanne DeStefano, Angela Gentile, Annette Ellis; her friend Betty from Arizona, Vickie, and sister-in-law, Ruth Nicotera. She was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, Vito and Bernice Nicotera; and her aunts and uncles whom she loved dearly. Appreciation is extended to Katherine’s nephew, Rick Nicotera who saw to her wellbeing and was so gracious to her; the Utica Police Department, especially Investigator Peter Paladino, for his honesty in assisting the family during this difficult time; and all her Utica family who loved her so much.
