Katherine Merle Lefler, 89, of Alexandria, passed away Saturday, December 1, 2018 in Edinburg, Va. Katherine Merle was born December 25, 1928 in Albemarle, North Carolina to the late Vernon and Kesta Mauldin Hunsucker. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald Eugene Lefler, brother, Vernon Hunsucker, Jr. and sister, Suzie Turner.

Merle was very active in her church, she played the church organ since the age of fifteen, directed the church choir, and shared her ministry through music, teaching many students throughout the years. Merle will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her family. The family will receive friends from 11:30 – 12:45 pm, Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at Hartsell Funeral Home, 522 N. 2nd St. Albemarle.

The funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm in Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, officiated by Pastor James Lawrence. Burial will conclude at the Fairview Memorial Park, located at 1425 East Main Street, Albemarle. Survivors include; son, Steve (Pam) Lefler; son, Lowell Lefler; daughter, Jeannie (George) Carter; daughter, Carole Brown; daughter, Mylinda (Jon) Hinkle; son, Thomas Lefler; grandchildren, Gary, Matthew (Kelly), Darren, Leah, Sheria (Chris), Jennifer, Ryan, Abigail, Jack, Amanda; great-grandchildren, Destiny, Cody, Maddy, Riley, Rusty, Hailey, Maddox; brother, Rosie Hunsucker; special long-time friend, Jim Edwards.

Memorials may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation, Donation Processing, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MS. 21741-5014, for research and support of Parkinson’s Disease. Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the Lefler family.
