A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2019 at Grace First Presbyterian Church, 606 Mockingbird Lane, Weatherford. Interment will be private at Greenwood Cemetery, Dallas.
Kaye was born May 2, 1933, in San Benito, the first of Simeon and Roberta (Bobbie) Clark’s four daughters. The family eventually moved to Weslaco where Kaye graduated high school and then enrolled as a Plan II Major at the University of Texas, concentrating on anthropology. While at UT, Kaye met Paul Martino, a ceramics engineering major from Dallas.
Shortly before finishing their respective degrees, the couple married in Weslaco on Sept. 4, 1953, and in 1954 moved to Tell City, Ind. , for Paul’s first job.
Ten years later, a job transfer brought the Martinos and their three children to Weatherford, where—except for a five-year period in the 1980s when another job change took them to Arkansas—Kaye and Paul have resided ever since. Kaye entered the teaching profession in 1968, teaching primarily health and the Youth Encounter Seminar (YES) class to Weatherford High School students. Near the end of her 10-year tenure at WHS, she served as the Dean of Girls.
She then went on to pursue her Master of Arts in school psychology from Trinity University and subsequently worked as a counselor with the Pecan Valley MHMR, with Dr. Ron Boney, and served on the Board of Directors of Family Services, Inc. In each of the communities Kaye called home, she was an active volunteer. In Weatherford she was involved in scouting, Republican Women, the Mary Martin exhibition that first appeared in the Weatherford Public Library, and the establishment of the Doss Heritage and Cultural Center. As a member of Grace-First Presbyterian Church, Kaye sang in the choir, held various educational and leadership positions and was an ordained deacon and elder.
Kaye loved to travel, particularly with family members. Through their annual summer vacations, she and Paul introduced their children to camping, national parks, historical sites, and cultural centers throughout the United States. Later, the couple visited Mexico, Canada, Alaska, Australia, Italy, Montenegro, Croatia and Kosovo, frequently with siblings, cousins, children or grandchildren.
As a mother and grandmother, Kaye was always supportive of her children and grandchildren’s interests. She eagerly attended their concerts, plays, exhibitions, games, recitals and graduations as often as she could and was immensely proud of the adults they all came to be. Kaye was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers-in-law and their wives, Karl, Kathy, Frank and Betty Martino.
Survivors include her husband, Paul; daughters and sons-in-law, Beth Lynn and Paul Dishman of Provo, Utah, and Sylvia and Joe Bierschenk of Nacogdoches; son and daughter-in-law, David and Lauri Martino of Austin; as well as sisters and brothers-in-law, Sue and Marshall Wortham of Wimberley; Mary and John Polk of Gruene; and Minta McIntosh of Georgetown. She is also survived by grandchildren, Lake Dishman and wife, Elysa, of Sandy, Utah, Mike Bierschenk and husband, Jarod Wilson, of Columbus, Ohio, Deya Justice and husband, David, of Bellevue, Wash, Elisa Bierschenk and husband, Rob Oler of San Antonio, Matthew Bierschenk and fiancée, Allison Reynolds, of Austin, Hannah Bowers and husband, Joel, of Fort Worth, Maggie Martino of Iowa City, Iowa, and Emma Martino and fiancé, Luke Kress, of Austin. Great-grandchildren include Jonah and Emelyn Dishman, Will Justice, and Olivia and Henry Bowers.
