LARRY D. MINGLE September 25, 1940 – January 8, 2019 Larry Drake Mingle died on Tuesday January 8, 2019 while in hospice care in Vero Beach, Florida. Larry was unflinchingly loyal to the two places he loved most: Cleveland, Ohio and Colgate University. Though he only lived in Cleveland for a few years in his early childhood, Larry stood by his Cleveland teams.
Colgate was better to Larry. He was class of 1962, but returned often to campus, and not just because two of his three children graduated from Colgate too, but because his time there provided lifelong friendships and a sense of home. Larry earned a Maroon Citation from Colgate in 1992, an award that recognized “significant and invaluable personal contributions” to the university.
Born in Montclair, New Jersey in 1940 and raised in Caldwell, Larry graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in 1958 as President of his class. After graduating from Colgate, Larry began his professional life in banking before he launched a long and successful career as an executive recruiter in New York. Larry learned the search business at Russell Reynolds Associates before starting his own firm in 1986 with two partners: Higdon, Joys & Mingle, Inc. Weary from years of commuting from his home in Summit, NJ to Manhattan, Larry and then-wife Pam retired to Jupiter, FL in 1996, where he was a member of the Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club.
Larry eventually settled in Vero Beach, where he was a member of the Moorings Yacht and Country Club. He was a former member of the Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, NJ. Larry wasn’t great at hobbies: he loved golf, but it gave him grief; he loved to travel, but it also gave him grief; he loved history, but that, too, gave him grief.
He could laugh about all that grief. Above all, Larry loved his children. In a letter to his children, Larry wrote: “When you are a parent someday, it will come to pass that you will reach a time when the most important thing in your life is that your children are happy — Mom and I have arrived there.
You have our support and love at all turns and please have a wonderful, fun filled life”. His children are committed to doing just that. A series of strokes took much away from Larry, but his wit and sense of humor remained until the end.
In addition to his partner Ann Evans, Larry is survived by his two sons, Timothy and Drew, daughter Evan, daughter-in-law Annie, son-in-law Topher, seven grandchildren, sister Maureen, and his ex-wife Pamela Mingle-Meyer. A memorial service will be later announced.
