Laurel Isabelle Gethin Smith, 99, of Dawson passed away at Lee County Health and Rehabilitation on December 24, 2018. A funeral service will be held at Dawson Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at 2:00 pm. A visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.

Laurel was born in Amsterdam, New York, on May 11, 1919, to William Richard Gethin and Myrtle Denton Gethin. She taught at Randolph Southern School in Shellman for twenty-four years. She also authored a column entitled, “A Religious Moment”, in the Dawson News.

Laurel was an active member of and Sunday School teacher at Dawson Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents, Laurel was preceded in death by her husband, Ardell Dennis Smith and their son, Dennis Ardell Smith, II. She is survived by children, Laurel Sandra Smith, William Gethin Franklin Smith (Nazare), Wendy Smith Edwards (Tom), and Robert David Smith (Margaret); grandchildren, Andrew, Daniel, Gabriella, Matt, Nate, Alec, Stephen, Micah, Darrah, Philip, Kathryn and Joel; and great-grandchildren, Nalani, Matok, Eleanor, Josie, and Amelia.

Laurel believed, “Flowers die and books live forever”. Therefore, the family requests no flowers; donations may be made in Laurel Smith’s memory to the Twin Oaks Elementary School Media Fund.
