LaVerne Blanche Stegman, 94, of Topeka, Kansas, formerly of Goodland, died Friday, May 25, 2018 in Topeka, Kansas. She was born February 21, 1924 to Luther and Lura (Stucker) Elliott in Milliken, Colorado. Her family moved to Goodland when she was 9 months old.

LaVerne grew up in Goodland and graduated Goodland High School with the class of 1942. On April 15, 1966, she and Dick Stegman were married in Denver, Colorado. During WWII, LaVerne worked for Civil Service at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Pasadena, California.

Later she worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell. She worked for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Office, in Goodland, until her retirement in 1986 after 25 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Goodland, Athena and Royal Neighbors of America.

LaVerne had an essential part in founding the Sherman County Alumni Association and All School Reunion held every five years in Goodland. Some of her favorite activities were dancing, socializing with friends, and spending time with her family. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dick; oldest stepson Randy Stegman; brother, Don Elliott; and infant sister, Irma Lee Elliott.

Survivors include her children; Cathy (Kevin Davis) Leonhart of Topeka, Kansas; Terry (Mary Kaye) Leonhart of Milliken, Colorado; daughter-in-law Debra (Randy) Stegman of Fort Worth, Texas; Tom (Pam) Stegman of McPherson, Kansas; Donna (John) White of Colby, Kansas; Becky Anderson (Joe Vasquez) of Ottawa, Kansas; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces & nephews; and her beloved cat Bootsie. Services will be held Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. MDT, at the First Christian Church, 711 Arcade Street in Goodland, with Pastor Doug Amend officiating. Interment will follow at the Goodland Cemetery.
