Lawerence Arnold Swift, age 97, of Washington, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington. Celebration of life services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 27th at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Chaplain Andrew Zuehlke officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Saturday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa.

Memorials have been established for Pleasant Hill Christian Church. Online condolences may be sent for Lawerence’s family through the web at www. jonesfh.com Lawerence was born November 3, 1921, in Washington County, Iowa, the son of William Earl Bryan and Ethel Leota (Caldwell) Swift.

He attended country school in Washington County and also attended school in West Chester. He graduated from Washington High School. Lawerence was united in marriage to Gertrude Alice Bruegge on June 9, 1947, in Washington, Iowa.

Lawerence was a lifelong resident of Washington County. He worked as an auto mechanic for Dick Ross Auto, Mills Auto and Buckwalter Motors. Lawerence was a member of Pleasant Hill Christian Church and was a veteran of World War II where he served honorably in the United States Army.

He enjoyed the outdoors and was a lifelong “hobby farmer”. He is survived by twin daughters, Donna Rinner and husband Wes of Wayland, Iowa; Carol Wehr and husband Ron of Keota, Iowa; five grandchildren: Tye Rinner and wife Diane of Washington, Iowa; Troy Rinner and wife Rachel of Wayland, Iowa; Alicia Pacha and husband Ed of Brighton, Iowa; Sean Wehr and wife Faith of Keota, Iowa; Bryan Wehr and wife Roxanne of West Chester, Iowa; and nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Edith Wellington of Washington, Iowa; brother, William “Bill” Swift and wife Bonnie of Washington, Iowa; sister, Martha Hawkins and husband Dale of Mesa, Arizona; sister, Annette Chalupa and husband Doug of Washington, Iowa; sister-in-law, JoAnn Swift of Washington, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Lawerence was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2014; eight siblings: Bernard Swift; Esther Houseal and husband Keith; George Swift and wife Dorothy; Charles Swift and wife Marie; Marion Swift; Doris Sojka; Jean Fritz and husband Al; Wanda Fritz and husband Clifford; and brother-in-law, Merritt Wellington.
