Obituary for Leon Arthur Hoevener Leon Arthur Hoevener, age 83, of Brownstown, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2018, at IU Methodist. Mr. Hoevener was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Brownstown, where he served as Elder and held various other church offices. He was a previous member of Grace Lutheran Church in Indianapolis, where he served as Elder, and St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Plainfield, where he also held various church offices.

Leon and his wife, Loretta, always attended church at the locations where Leon was stationed. Born on October 28, 1934, in Tampico, he was the son of Arthur and Lela Toppe Hoevener, both of whom preceded him in death. On August 6, 1955, at Tampico Baptist Church, he married Loretta Beldon and she survives in Brownstown.

After graduation from high school, Mr. Hoevener enlisted in the military in 1952. He joined the Army National Guard in Seymour, Indiana, and served as a Federal Technician for 42 years. He also served as Chief Warrant Officer 4 and Manager of Transportation Motor Pool until he retired in 1989.

Mr. Hoevener was called back to active duty in 1991 and retired on October 31, 1994, after serving in support of Desert Storm and Desert Shield. Leon was blessed with several close friendships with fellow soldiers. Mr. Hoevener was a member of the Governor’s Honor Guard and received the following Federal awards: Meritorious Service medal, Army Commendation medal, Army Achievement medal, Army Reserve Component medal, National Defense Service medal, Humanitarian Service medal, Armed Forces Reserve medal, NCO Professional Development ribbon and Army Service medal.

In addition, he received the following State awards: Indiana Distinguished service medal, Indiana Commendation medal, Indiana Long Service medal, Indiana Emergency Service ribbon, and Assistant Chief of Staff badge. Mr. Hoevener was one of the Founding Fathers of The Military Department of Indiana Ceremonial Unit. Leon was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He loved attending church, visiting with relatives and friends, playing Euchre, raising cattle, and working on old trucks and tractors. Survivors also include two sons: Gregory Leon (Susan) Hoevener of Madison, and Craig Arthur (Teresa) Hoevener of Morgantown; one daughter, Debra Sue (Gary) Ward of Kokomo; three sisters: Carol Webb of Columbus, Shirley (Mike) Miller of Greensburg, and Marilyn (Jerry) Christopher of Seymour; 11 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren. 3 step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great granddaughter; Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Shane Arthur Hoevener, and brothers-in-law, Carl Webb and Bob Huls.

Funeral services for Leon Arthur Hoevener will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, July 26, 2018, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, with Pastor Jeremy Yeadon officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., and from 9:00 A.M. until the time of the service on Thursday, July 26, 2018, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown. Full Military Honors provided by The Military Department of Indiana Ceremonial Unit.

Interment will be at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, Brownstown. Memorials may be given to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Brownstown, or Wounded Warriors. Online memorials and condolences may be given at www.
