Obituary for Leonard Carlton Chapman Leonard Carlton Chapman, age 83, passed away at his home in Goose Creek, surrounded by his family on Saturday, December 29. Leonard was born March 10, 1935 to Chalmers Clinton Chapman and Emmie Bryant Chapman of Perry, Georgia. He married Hortense Bailey on November 13, 1957, and they traveled the country together as a Navy family with their children, Beverly, Richard, and Emmie.
Leonard retired from the Navy in 1974 after 20 years of service, including commendations and wartime duty in Viet Nam. In Viet Nam, he was stationed at Cat Lo Naval Base where he actively handled Agent Orange and participated in brown water naval activities. After his retirement, Leonard stayed active in his community.
He was a member of the Berkeley Shrine Club for many years and served as a past president. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 166, Tincan Sailors, and Goose Creek Masonic Lodge 401. Leonard is survived by his wife, Hortense, his children, Beverly Meadows, Richard Chapman, and Emmie Lindner, his grandchildren, Alicia (Mike) Meadows, Josh (Leslie) Meadows, Jessica (Adam) Marickovich, Stephanie (Matt) Sparrow, and Brandon (Jesse) Lindner, and great grandchildren Alyssa, Connor, Kara, Ella, Evie, and Tess.
A Memorial service for Leonard will be held on Thursday January 3, 2019 at American Legion Post 166, from 3-7 PM, located at 116 Howe Hall Road, Goose Creek, South Carolina 29445.
