Lloyd’s Obituary Lloyd Brown, age 94, of Terre Du Lac passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2019 peacefully surrounded by his children. He was born on Tuesday, December 9, 1924 in Fayette, Missouri to the late Lloyd and Roberta (Clough) Brown. In addition to his parents, Lloyd was preceded in death by his loving wife, Iris Ann (Vail) Brown.
Lloyd (also known to friends as Bob or Doc) grew up in Marshall, Missouri. Lloyd started college at Missouri Valley College working towards his Bachelor degree. He interrupted his college journey in order to serve in the U.S. Navy during WW2.
It was upon his return from the war and finishing his time at Missouri Valley where he met the love of his life, Iris Vail, on her first day of school. They were together for over 70 years (and married for 67). He continued his education and received a BS in Electrical Engineering from University of Missouri at Columbia (Mizzou).
He then went on to receive his Masters Degree and Doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis. After working in industry for a number of years, he was recruited to return and teach at Washington University. During his thirty-plus year as an educator at Washington University he received numerous awards and recognition from his students including a number of “Outstanding Faculty of The Year” and the prestigious W.U. Alumni Foundation Award.
Through a friend, Lloyd became involved in Forensic Fire and Casualty Investigations. It wasn’t long before he became a well known and highly respected fire investigator and forensic casualty consultant and a second career was thus born. Lloyd was a big believer in serving the community and helping out where he could.
He was active in Lion’s, IEEE, the MO Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators, Terre Du Lac Country Club and Terre Du Lac Association. Lloyd was passionate about helping to promote higher education and spent over 25 years volunteering as a member of the Board of Trustees at Missouri Valley College. Despite his declining health he made it a priority to attend his final Missouri Valley College Board meeting during graduation ceremonies earlier this month.
He was driven to make a difference for his students, the subject areas in which he worked, and the community in which he lived. When describing his two main careers, he often said “Teaching was the most satisfying and the Forensic Fire Investigation work was the most interesting…and fun”. Lloyd is survived by four children, James V. Brown of St. Louis, Lloyd Brown, Jr. and wife Mina of Chesterfield, Trish Brown and husband Don Ciaglo of Granite Bay, CA.
and Jeanne Schober of Kirkwood; eight grandchildren, April, Jim, Kathy, Joseph, Thomas James, Shelly, Tory and Darcy; seven great-grandchildren, Maddison, Cameryn, Samuel, Xander, Kaylyn, Ethan and Jordyn; sister, Dorothy Salyer and numerous other family and friends. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at C. Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Home in Bonne Terre from 10:00 AM until Service time of 11:00 AM with Dave Dealy officiating. Private family interment will be at Ridge Park Cemetery at a later date.
