Luigi Nicolo Bertoia, 90, of Lewiston, NY, passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at Mount St. Mary’s Hospital. Born on September 28, 1928 in San Lorenzo, Italy, he was the son of the late Severino and Beatrice (DiPaoli) Bertoia. In 1946, at the age of 17, Luigi went to work in France, Belgium and Luxembourg, employed in the coal mines.

In 1949, he moved to Alberta, Canada working as a cowboy. On June 14, 1952, Luigi married the former Lillian Maturani. She predeceased him on February 12, 2015.

He became a “proud” citizen of the United States of America in 1956 and in 1957, mostly by himself, with his talents and expertise, Luigi built their home, his pride and joy, at 983 James Drive in Lewiston. In 1959, he was intricate in the building of the New York State Power Authority, where he was employed for 24 years as a carpenter and mechanic, until he retired in 1986. Luigi enjoyed woodworking, gardening and fishing and was proud of his accomplishment of bowling a 300.

Luigi is survived by children, Denise (Richard) Karnath and Ronald (Lynda) Bertoia; cherished grandchildren, Michael Karnath, Christian Karnath, Julie (Richard Hooper) Bertoia and Jillian Bertoia; adored great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Gianna Karnath; siblings, Alfonso (Jan) Bertoia and Itala (Bruno) Marchi and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by sisters, Gemma and Adrianna (late Dennis). The family will be present for visitation on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. in the Chapel of OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY.

Family and friends are invited to attend Luigi’s Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, February 15th at 11:00 a.m. which will be celebrated in St. Peter’s Church, 620 Center Street, Lewiston, NY, with Msgr. David LiPuma serving as celebrant. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH.

Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. Arrangements are under the direction of Michael R. Goodlander.
