Born on May 21, 1932 in Dagda, Latvia, to Anna and Karlis Jekabsons, Maija with her family left Latvia in 1944 and spent 3 years in DP camps in Germany, before emigrating to the USA, where she built a new life, but always maintained her Latvian roots. Maija has left behind a long legacy of love for nature and gardening, cooking, music, and family gatherings.

Maija was predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, Thomas E. Carey, Jr., her parents, and her sister, Selga Jekabsons. She is celebrated as a loving mother of Michael Carey (Cristina Losada), David Carey, and Christine Carey Steele (Jamie) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Nicholas Carey (Rachel Katz) of Seattle, Washington, as well as a beloved Grandmother (“Nana”) to Celine, Austin, Sophia, Tommy and Emily Carey; Kelcey, Cassidy, Cian, and Aine Steele; Griffin and Graeme Carey. Maija is also survived by her sisters, Ilze (Jan) Koch, Mara (David) Cox, and Ilona (David) Reif, along with a beautiful sea of dear nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A Memorial Service is to be held privately on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 3pm. For more information, please contact the family and/or inquire with George H. Rohde & Son Funeral Home for details. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Cincinnati, P.O. Box 633597, Cincinnati, OH 45263.
