Obituary for Major Joe D. Black, Jr., USMC, Retired Major Joe Darius Black, Jr., USMC, Retired, 48, of Hodges, husband of Holly Wright Black, is now with the Lord as of Wednesday, October 10, 2018. Born in Greenwood, he is the son of Rev. Joe D. Black, Sr. and Angie Hammon Black.

He received his B.A. degree in English from Carson-Newman University. Joe retired with the rank of Major from the US Marine Corps in 2015, where he was an ACFT Maintenance Officer. He received numerous decorations during his career, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendations, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Letters of Appreciation, Meritorious Mast, Marksman Rifle Qualification Badge and Expert Pistol Qualification Badges.

He and his family attended New Covenant Church and North Side Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Holly, and his children, Caroline, Joe D. III, Samuel and Jesse, all of the home; his parents of Lavonia, GA; his sisters, Angel Cockrell and her husband, Jeff, of Greenwood and Sherri Black and John, of Lavonia, GA; nephews and niece, Jeremy, Ryan and Lily; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Charles and Debbie Wright of New Market, TN. He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Lois Hammon and Russie Medlock.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel, 1025 South Main Street, Greenwood, SC 29646. Burial, with full military honors, will be at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Joe will be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, son, brother, friend and follower of Jesus Christ.
