Obituary of Margarethe Soesman On Monday, November 12, 2018, Margarethe Nancy Soesman, loving mother, grandmother “Oma”, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away at the age of 79 in Keller, TX. Margarethe was born on June 25, 1939 as a Dutch citizen in Madioen (Madiun), on the island of Java, in Indonesia. As a young child, she spent nearly 5 years as a prisoner of war in Japanese and Indonesian prison camps.

After WWII, she and her mother returned to The Netherlands where she lived until she immigrated to the United States at the age of 17 on December 9, 1956. She became a naturalized citizen of the United States on June 10, 1965. Margarethe was married twice, and raised three sons, Rick, Mike, and Frans, and two daughters, Lori and Pam.

Margarethe had many interests. She was an avid reader, enjoying everything from romance novels to history to science fiction. She had an intense interest in the metaphysical and supernatural world.

She enjoyed writing poems, dancing, and listening to music, especially that of Julio Inglesias. She loved traveling, whether it was up and down the coast of California or back to Europe. She had a real flair for style, both in fashion and interior decorating – she always knew how to turn a house into a home.

Margarethe was known for her compassion – she was always willing to listen to one’s problems and offer advice. She never met a stranger, frequently taking in those going through tough times, even when she was going through tough times herself. She will be remembered for her fierce independence, her playful sense of humor, and her compassionate spirit.

Margarethe is survived by her five children – Rick Barnette, Mike (Laura) Barnette, Lori Wiles, Frans (Teresa) Van Ellekom, and Pam (Darrin) Phipps; her ten grandchildren – Brittany (Kevin), Brandon (Lindsey), Greg, Amanda, Spencer, Keenan, Nolan, Katherine, Jessica, and Maddi; her four great-grandchildren – Cailey, Reece, Jaxson, and Levi; her brother, Frans “Frank” Soesman, and her sister, Nieke (Erik) Rauws; her nephews, Tim (Yasmin) and Tony Jr.; and her nieces, Desiree, Lina, Mia, and Hailey; and many family members and friends around the world. Margarethe was preceded in death by her beloved parents: father, Francois “Frans” Soesman, and mother, Petronella “Peggy” Van Ellekom; and son-in-law, Gregg Wiles. A private memorial and scattering of ashes will be held by her children in California.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Margarethe’s name to the American Heart Association.
