Marie-Luise (Mary Lou) A. Vaughn , 84 of Tiffin, Ohio died on Sunday, October 28, 2018 with her family at her side. She was born September 25, 1934 in Frankfurt, Germany to Dorla (Mast) and Johannes Mayer. She married Paul Leonard Vaughn June 25, 1960 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bornheim, near Frankfurt.

Survivors include her husband Paul, a daughter and son in law, Anne and Terry Zimmerman, of Tiffin, three grandchildren, Matthew (Jill) Zimmerman of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Mark (Noel’) Zimmerman of Tiffin and Marliese (Chad) Gibson of Hilliard; and six grandchildren, Anderson of Menomonee Falls, Vaughn, Bryce and Corinne of Tiffin, and Stella and Barrett of Hilliard; and a sister Hella (Gunter) Gauss of NeuIsenburg, Germany. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Vaughn obtained a business degree while still in Germany and initially was employed in the import/export business.

In 1960 she immigrated to the United States, settling first in Carey, Ohio and moving to Tiffin in 1962. She was employed by the Tiffin Municipal and Seneca County Court systems through 1978. Thereafter, she enjoyed volunteer work and served 30 years as the presiding judge at the local precinct.

In 1970, Mary Lou became a naturalized citizen of the United States, delivering the address to the naturalization class. She demonstrated much pride in becoming a citizen. Mary Lou was a stranger to none and most notably was known as “Omi” to many.

She enjoyed attending as many activities her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were involved in as possible. They were her pride and she was their inspiration. It took much courage to leave her homeland and settle in a country where she knew only her husband.

She never knew the word impossible. She was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes fan, attending many games in the past and always watching them on TV. She enjoyed cooking, needlework, spending time with her family, camping and U.S. history.

She was a member of St. Joseph Parish, EAA, American Civil War Museum of Ohio and the Johnson Island Roundtable. Visitation will be from 4-8 PM, Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Hoffmann –Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, with the funeral Mass at St. Joseph Church Thursday November 1, 2018 at 10:30 AM with the Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating.

Burial will follow the luncheon in St. Mary Cemetery in Carey. Memorials may be made to FACT, Mercy Health – Tiffin Foundation or American Civil War Museum of Ohio. Condolences may be sent and the guestbook signed at www.
