Marie’s Obituary Marie P. (Martinelli) Fehlow, 93, formerly of Plymouth, passed away Saturday, February 23 2019. She was the daughter of the late Luigi and Eliza (Maglaguti) Martinelli, born in Plymouth on March 18, 1925 in the family home. She graduated from Plymouth High School, class of 1942, and entered nurses training at Quincy City Hospital in 1943, affiliating at Bellevue Hospital in New York City and Butler Psychiatric Hospital in Providence, RI.
She joined the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps in 1943, serving 6 months of active duty at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts in 1945, followed by duty in the Army Nurse Corps in 1948 at the Medical Field Service School, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas and Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado.
She served a total of five and a half years of reserve and active duty service. She met and married her husband, the late Lieutenant Colonel Otto A. Fehlow, in 1948 after meeting at Ft. Sam Houston.
It was during this time that she became a certified Red Cross Nurse, serving in that role during her many years as an Army Wife, serving at several posts in the United States including two overseas assignments in Japan and Taiwan. After returning to Plymouth in 1972 following her husband’s retirement from 30 years of service in the Regular Army, she became actively involved in the community serving twice on the town’s Nuclear Matters Committee, as a substitute school nurse, and as an active board member of the Jordan Hospital Club for many years. She developed an on-site program at the Jordan Hospital introducing children to the hospital experience which became an adjunct to the first grade Health & Family Life curriculum in the Plymouth, Carver, Kingston and Marshfield public schools.
She was an active volunteer with Cranberry Hospice, a board member of the Plymouth Area Red Cross, and was actively involved with League of Women Voters, the Antiquarian Society, Pilgrim Society, Fragment Society and Plimoth Plantation. She leaves four children, William Fehlow of Minnesota, Susan Fehlow of Arizona, Jane Fehlow Beddoe of Virginia and Christina Fehlow Rowell of Massachusetts; two granddaughters, Sarah Coughter and Anne Beddoe; and one great granddaughter, Emerson Marie Coughter. She was pre-deceased by her siblings, Bruno Martinelli, Sylvia Priestley, Cleofa Tong, Horace Martinelli and Alba Thompson, and leaves many nieces and nephews.
The family is honoring her request that there be no public service. Her ashes will be interred next to her husband at Vine Hills Cemetery in Plymouth at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the American Red Cross and Plymouth Public Library.
