Marion “Bud” Long Weiss March 12, 1928 – January 18, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Marion Long “Bud” Weiss passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of January 18, 2019, at the age of 90. Born on March 12, 1928, in Rock Island, Illinois, Marion was raised on a farm near Edgington, Illinois. He was nicknamed “Bud” by his classmates at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy where he graduated at the head of his class in 1951.

Bud worked for 32 years as a nuclear engineer at General Electric in San Jose, and an additional 20 years as a Mathematics teacher at San Jose City College. He was also a Coast Guard officer, auto mechanic hobbyist, and a San Francisco Giants Fan (since 1958). As a Boy Scout leader, he became a backpacking enthusiast – a love he passed on to his sons through 50-mile hikes along the John Muir Trail.

Most importantly, Bud was a loving family man. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Peg; his children, Dirk, Michael, David (Nancy), and Timothy; sister, Ruth Elaine Bennett; grandsons, Joshua (Adrianna) Pressman and Sean Weiss; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his father Harold, mother Stella Jo (King), brothers, Lawrence, Elmer, and Leroy, Sister, Mary Eloise Lawson, Brothers-in-Law, Carroll L. ‘Bud’ Lawson and Larry G. Bennett, as well as his sister-in-law, Nancy McCormick.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Bud’s life on Saturday, January 26, 2019, with a mass beginning at 1:00 pm at Sacred Heart Church in Saratoga, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Bud will be interned at Gate of Heaven Cemetery during a private ceremony in Los Altos. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Coast Guard Foundation at coastguardfoundation.org.
