Marjorie “Margie” Fullen Cox of Marietta, Georgia passed away peacefully and surrounded by her loving family on Monday, April 29, 2019. She was 98 years old. Marjorie is survived by her daughter Nancy Starratt, her son David Cox and wife Teresa, grandson Brent Starratt and wife April, grandson Lewis Cox, granddaughter Samantha Starratt and partner Garrett Murck, granddaughter Abigail Cox, great-grandson Brent Starratt III and special friend Sloane Lowery who she thought of as a great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Loyd Cox, her sisters, Carol Dotzenrod and Joyce Ratzloff, and brother, Jack Fullen. Margie was a beloved wife to her late husband and a devoted mother and grandmother. Her life was a living example of one of her favorite bible verses, Colossians 3:12: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience”.

Born in Austin, Minnesota on July 9, 1920 to Warren John and Gratia Fullen, Margie was the oldest of four children and grew up in Minnesota spending her summers in the great outdoors and on the lake. Throughout her childhood, she took great pride in helping her mother run the household and care for her siblings until beginning her college studies to train as an X-Ray Technician at the University of Minnesota. At the start of World War II and after completing her X-Ray Technician training, she joined the war effort with her sister, Joyce.

During the next several years, they spent their time traveling throughout the United States, working at the nation’s Air Force bases, helping to prepare young soldiers for war. During her extended service during the Korean War, Margie met Loyd Cox, a Navy sailor, at a USO Dance in San Diego and the two were later married on February 9, 1952. At the end of the Korean War, the newly married couple returned to Loyd’s home state of Alabama so that he could complete his graduate degree.

From there, the couple moved to the state of Georgia, residing first in Dalton and later settling in Marietta, which would be their home for more than 60 years. During the family’s long and happy life in Marietta, both Loyd and Margie became pillars of the community. Loyd had a rewarding career with the Marietta City School System and Margie spent many years working at the Youth Museum in Marietta, lending to the commitment of her and her husband’s belief in the power of education to transform lives.

Margie was an active member of the family’s church, First Baptist Church of Marietta, where she enjoyed volunteering in the nursery and rocking newborn babies, which she said brought her great peace and solace. In their later years and during retirement, Margie and Loyd traveled abroad extensively and enjoyed attending Elderhostel programs nationwide while remaining active in their church and the community. Margie brought out the best in all those whose lives she touched, filling us all with joy and reminding us every day, just as the bible does in Psalm 118:24, “This is the day the Lord made; let us rejoice and be glad in it”.

She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 13th at 3:00 pm at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta, GA. The family will receive visitors at 2:00 pm immediately before the service.
