Mary Alice Bearup, 87 of Petoskey, Michigan, died May 10, 2019 at Hiland Cottage in Petoskey while surrounded by her family. Mary Alice was born on May 16, 1931, in Cheboygan, Michigan, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Bur) Passino. She grew up in Riggsville and was a graduate of Pellston High School.

On June 13, 1951, she married Gale “Rod” Bearup in Cheboygan. They were happily married for 67 years. Mary Alice enjoyed working in her yard, whether that meant tending to her flower gardens, simply watching the birds at the feeders, or picking blueberries.

She enjoyed being outdoors. She took many trips to Canada to go fishing. Mary Alice also enjoyed bowling with friends and spending time with her family.

Mary Alice is survived by her husband Gale Bearup of Petoskey; daughter Linda (Mick) Godzik of Larks Lake; two sons, Richard and Michael Bearup, both of Harbor Springs; grandchildren, Susie (Tony) Cancilla, Joe (Kathy) Godzik, Michelle (Ed) Zmikly and Chad (Lynette) Bearup; great-grandchildren, Josh, Abigail, Aaron, Olivia, Veronica, Taeya, Cohen and Eliana; brother, Robert (June) Passino; best friend Mary Boettger; and all her Wednesday luncheon friends. Mary Alice is preceded in death by her parents; son, Robert “Bob” Bearup; and brothers, Euclid, Jack and Clem. Friends and family wishing to make a charitable donation in memory of Mary Alice are asked to please consider Hiland Cottage Hospice House in Petoskey.

The staff at Hiland Cottage truly gave such wonderful care and loving support during this difficult time and we cannot thank you enough. A memorial service is being planned for later this summer, details will be announced at a later date.
