Obituary for Mary Alice Ross Mary Alice Ross 1934-2018 “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, … for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “ Matthew 6:20-21 On June 21, the Ross family stored up one of our most valued treasures in heaven. Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great “granny” went to be with the Lord after suffering complications following surgery.
As she sang many times to her grandchildren, “you’ll never know dear how much I love you”. Mary Alice Ross was born in Checotah, Oklahoma on January 12, 1934 to Dillard and Winnie Williams. She was the fourth of eight children.
The Williams family moved to Kern County in 1946. Mary met Roy Ross at church in 1950 when Roy’s matchmaking cousin introduced them. They were married in 1951.
They picked potatoes to pay for their honeymoon. This was the beginning of a marriage that exemplified a “strong work ethic”. Together Mary and Roy tirelessly worked to provide a comfortable and nurturing home for their three children.
Their son, Eldon, was born in 1952 and Mary began her lifelong career as “Mom”. The family of three became four in 1953 when Ralph was born. Angie completed the family in 1959.
How does one sum up the life of someone so dearly loved? To her family, friends, and church, Mary is treasured for her fierce loyalty, dedication, support, and unmatched generosity. She filled her home with family photos, beautiful crocheted pieces, handicrafts, and favorite antiques.
She was extremely talented artistically, but she was too humble to accept any praise. Mary loved color and arrayed her yard with vibrant hues. She will be remembered for her beautiful flowers, manicured lawn, yard decorations, and plump juicy tomatoes and other vegetables.
Her appreciation for nature included all animals, especially the feathered and four-legged kind. Over the years she had a vast array of pets. She rescued, adopted, and adored her dogs, horses, cats, tortoises, ducks, chickens, geese, turkeys, guinea pigs, exotic birds, and at one time, even a skunk.
Mary and Roy enjoyed the outdoors. Many vacations were spent in the mountains, lakes, deserts, and beaches. Whether she was racing the dune buggy in the Pismo Dunes or laughing uncontrollably on rollercoasters, Mary’s love for speed gave us some of our fondest memories.
Her motto was “the faster the better! ” Family get-togethers will never be the same without her signature specialties: banana pudding, fried potatoes, and sweet tea. She is survived by Roy, her husband of nearly 67 years; children Eldon, Dana, and Angie; grandchildren Colby, Dustin, Leah, and Derek; great–grandchildren Taylor, Reagan, Noah, Gabriel and Addison; siblings Carl Williams, Edith Burns, Joann Moore, Nancy Williams, Earl and Ginny Ross, Ramona Ross; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her son, Ralph; her parents; siblings George and Virginia Cagle, Doyle and Norma Jean Arnold, Lois Brown, Billy Ross, and Jim Williams. (In-laws are not identified as such because Mary never made that distinction. ) The Ross family would like to thank the staff members at Memorial Hospital’s 4 West wing and Hoffman Hospice Home for their compassion, diligence, and kindness – not only to Mary, but also to the family.
