Mary’s Obituary Mrs. Mary Anna Burgee, age 90 of Frederick passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center, Frederick. She was the loving and deeply devoted wife of the late Luther Merhl Burgee who passed away in 1978. Born on December 12, 1928 in Frederick she was the daughter of the late Austin & Nannie Mantz.

Mrs. Burgee was a graduate of Frederick High School, Class of 1946. She was employed in the office at Woolworth’s after high school, then at the Walkersville Sewing Company. After marriage she was bookkeeper for Rippeon’s Garage in Clarksburg.

She volunteered as a bookkeeper for Hyattstown Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) for many years, supporting her husband, who was an active volunteer firefighter. When he passed away, she became employed by the fire department, ultimately retiring in 1994 from Montgomery County Department of Fire Rescue Services as the administrative assistant at HVFD. Mrs. Burgee was recognized for her many years of volunteer work by being awarded honorary membership at HVFD.

She also belonged to the HVFD Ladies Auxiliary, holding many elected positions, and was a Past President of the Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Rescue Association Ladies Auxiliary. She participated on many fire prevention committees at the county and state level. Mrs. Burgee continued supporting her husband’s interests by participating and supporting the New Market Lions Club as a devoted widow.

She supported her daughters in all their school activities by volunteering in classrooms. She was a Girl Scout Leader for multiple troops over many years. She participated and held offices in the PTA over the years.

She was the treasurer of the Frederick High School Band Boosters and enjoyed spending her time running the concession stand at the football games and chaperoning many band trips. Her last but most adored volunteer opportunity was at Valley Elementary in Jefferson. She volunteered there to follow her grandchildren.

They graduated but she remained at Valley for many years with Mrs. Remmert and her 2nd grade class. She was a PTA volunteer and received recognition for her many hours of service there. Mrs. Burgee was the mother of Deborah Lynne Hagberg & husband Kevin of Brookeville, Lisa Diann Simone & husband John of Manchester, and Carol Ann Remsberg & husband Dwain of Walkersville; the grandmother of Steven Hagberg & wife Valerie, Benjamin Phelps & wife Michelle, Tyler Phelps & wife Bobbi, Travis & Rylee Remsberg and Piper Simone; and the great-grandmother of Trent, Alaina, Barrett, Harper and Madelyn.

Mrs. Burgee is also survived by her sister Wilma Phebus & husband Clark of Paw Paw, WV and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Mrs. Burgee is preceded in death by her brother Austin “Petie” Mantz, Jr. Friends will be received on Sunday, February 3, 2019 from 1 – 3 PM at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick where services will be held in the Etchison Memorial Chapel on Monday, February 4, 2019 at 1 PM. The interment will follow at Mt.
