Mary Elizabeth (McAndrew) Ainsworth, a resident of Oswego NY, passed away peacefully at Oswego Hospital on Tuesday May 8, 2018. She was 93. Mary was born in Great Valley NY on May 24, 1924, the daughter of James and Julia (Fitzgerald) McAndrew.

She graduated from Pavilion High School, Pavilion, NY and was a proud graduate of St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Rochester NY where she earned her RN in 1945. She enrolled at St. Bonaventure University in Olean NY where she met her late husband, John. They were married in 1947 and enjoyed a 63 year union until John’s death in 2010.

Mary was devoted to her family, her faith and her profession. She was a nurse in Sherman NY and Warsaw NY prior to her employment at the Oswego Hospital from 1966 to 1986. Former patients and co-workers describe her as strong, kind, knowledgeable but one who tolerated no nonsense.

Mary enjoyed golf, bridge, the company of her friends and family, baking delicious treats, and spending winters in Florida. She is survived by three sons, Paul (Mary) of Gansevoort NY, John (Susan) of Eynon Pa, Tom (Suzanne) of Juneau Alaska and two daughters, Margaret (Starr Parmley) of Constantia NY, and Ann (Robert) Howieson of Cicero, NY. She had ten grandchildren, Heather Ainsworth, Bridget (Dan) Bowen, Marissa Ainsworth, Alexandra (James) Keyzer, Carly (Derek) Shayka, Caitlin (Jeremy) Hay, John Howieson, Andrew Ainsworth, Nolin Ainsworth, and Grant Ainsworth as well as five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews with special appreciation to Joyce McAndrew.

The family wishes to thank the many caregivers in recent years with special thanks to the staff at Bishops Commons, St. Luke’s, as well as the 4th floor care providers at the Oswego Hospital. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m.May 12 at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church on East Fifth Street Oswego NY where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery on Rte.

481 in Oswego. Calling hours will be 4-7 p.m. on Friday May 11 at Dowdle Funeral Home, 154 East 4th Street, Oswego. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Human Concerns food pantry 85 East 4th Street, Oswego,where Mary volunteered many community hours.
