Obituary for Mary Francis Brehm Mary Francis (Bathen) Brehm, 96 of Gering, Nebraska passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Regional West Medical Center. Funeral service will be Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel with Pastor Seth Leypoldt officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 1-7 pm at the chapel. Memorials may be given to Gering Volunteer Fire Dept or donor’s choice. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.

geringchapel.com. Mary Francis (Bathen) Brehm, the only child born to Edward and Laura (Rice) Bathen, was born in Omaha, NE on April 15, 1921. One year later, her parents separated, and she with her mother, moved to Frontier County NE where she grew up and received her education.

On August 26, 1937, she was united in marriage to Everett Day in Beaver City, NE. Four children were born of this union: William (Bill) Day, Helen Marie; Gerald (Gerry) Lee, and Eloise (Elly) Ann. They lived and farmed in Frontier County until 1953, when they moved to Scottsbluff County.

They lived in the Highland and Roubideaux areas until moving to Gering in 1955. She and Everett separated in 1956 and were later divorced. On May 29, 1964, she and Jacob (Jake) Brehm were united in marriage and the following year, on May 16, 1965, their daughter, Rebecca Lynn, was born.

They owned and operated the Gering Bakery until 1974 when the business was sold and thereafter, they enjoyed retirement by traveling and camping. She was a woman of many talents such as: cake decorating, crocheting, sewing, knitting, gardening, baking, cooking, and many other things. She was an avid reader and loved to learn new things.

In December 2014, she was awarded an honorary high school diploma from Gering Public Schools. She was very proud of this moment in her life. Her faith was very important to her, and she loved reading the Bible and other Christian devotionals.

Mary was a fifty-year member of the First United Methodist Church in Gering, NE. Mary Francis Brehm is survived by her son, William (Bill) and his wife, Donna Day Lakewood, CO; daughter, Helen Wells, Loveland, CO; daughter, Eloise (Elly) and husband, Ken Meyer, Steamboat Springs, CO, and daughter, Rebecca (Becky) and husband Brent Birrell, Twin Falls, ID. Eleven grandchildren: Brenda (Wells) Duncan, Loveland, CO; Craig Wells, Greeley, CO; Rev.

Victoria ( Vicki Wells) Fishel, Madison, WI; Kyle Wells, Gering, NE; Michael (Mike) Day and wife, Stefani, Littleton, CO; surviving grandson-in law Chuck Harr, of Lakewood, CO; Matthew (Matt) Day and wife, Joanie, of Lakewood, CO; Ken Meyer Jr., Phoenix, AZ; Wanda (Meyer) Bamberger and husband, Stephen of Holladay, UT; Michaela Hawley, Twin Falls, ID, and Kaitlyn Hawley, Twin Falls, ID. Two step-grandchildren: Breana Birrell, Boise, ID and Brian Birrell, Boise, ID. Fourteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mary is, also, survived by one half-sister, Delores (Bathen) Hartung, Omaha, NE; surviving half-sister-in-law, Eileen Bathen, Orlando, FL, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mary Francis Brehm is preceded in death by her parents, Laura (Rice) Day and Edward Bathen; her husband, Jake Brehm; her son, Gerry Day; son-in-law, Louis Wells; grandson, Timothy Wells; grand-daughter, Michelle (Day) Harr; half-brother, Robert Bathen; half-brother and wife, John and Mary Bathen; half-brother-in-law, Russell Hartung and two step-sisters, Claire Kreitzler and Dorothy Nelson. Mary Francis Brehm was known by many names: mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, friend, wife, daughter, and child of God.

Her greatest legacy was the importance of family and the gifts of love and laughter. She will be greatly missed. Her memory will live on through all the lives she has touched.
