Mary Hite Vitrikas September 22, 1921 – December 21, 2018 Share this obituary Local Florists Sign Guestbook Mary Hite Vitrikas, 97, of Charlottesville, Virginia died on December 21, 2018 at Morningside Assisted Living. Born September 22, 1921 in Middlebrook, Virginia, she was the daughter of Gabriel and Nettie Hite. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold Vitrikas; sisters, Ruth Meyers and Ruby Hylton; and brother, Russell Hite.

Mary’s mother and father died when she was five years old and she was raised by her sister, Ruth, and her husband, Leon Meyers, in Covington, Va. Upon graduation from Covington High School, Mary went to the National Business College in Roanoke, Va. , and after graduating, moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Department of Defense throughout World War II.

In 1943, she was one of the first workers assigned to the Pentagon. Mary met her husband Harold in the Pentagon where he was assigned after WWII. They married on March 15, 1947 and in May 1948 they had a son, Bob.

A loyal Army wife, Mary travelled with Harold to FT Monroe, Va. , then lived as part of the Occupation Forces in Karlsruhe, Germany, then FT Jay, N.Y. and FT Campbell, Ky. , where Harold retired from the Army in 1958.

Mary and Bob lived in Covington, Va. , when Harold was assigned to duty in Japan 1955-56. Following retirement, Mary and Harold moved to Rotterdam, N.Y., where they lived until 1983 when they moved to Richmond, Va.

In 2006, four years after Harold’s death, Mary moved to Morningside Assisted Living in Charlottesville, Va. , until her passing. Mary is survived by her son and daughter in-law Bob and Chris Vitrikas of Barboursville, Va.

; grandchildren Kirsten Vitrikas of Vacaville, Calif. , Kelly Vitrikas of Vienna, Va. , and Ryan McRorie of Durango, Colo.

; nieces Joanne Austin of Covington, Va. , Anne Hite of Daleville, Va. , Dottie Ward of Roanoke, Va.

, and Linda Sue Williams of Seymour, Tenn. ; and nephews Buddy Hite of Mechanicsville, Va. , Wayne Hylton of Knoxville, Tenn.

, and Steve Vateckas of Wellsville, N.Y. Special thanks are sent to the loving and caring staff at Morningside Assisted Living whose dedication and sensitivity helped make the end of Mary’s life journey as comfortable as possible. Mary will be buried with her husband Harold in Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined. Hill & Wood Funeral Home – Greene Chapel is assisting the family.
