Mary K Frederick , April 10, 1937 — November 30, 2018

Mary K. Frederick, age 81, of Faribault, MN, passed away Friday, November 30, 2018, at her winter home in Weslaco, TX, following an extended illness. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 139 Mercy Drive, Faribault. Interment will be held at the Calvary Cemetery in Madison Lake, MN at a later date.

Memorial visitation will be held on Friday from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. at the church. The family prefers that memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society or Faribault Hospice in memory of Mary. Arrangements are with the Parker Kohl Funeral Home of Faribault.

Mary Kathleen was born on April 10, 1937 in Claremont, MN to Henry and Edith (Hofius) Cassen. She graduated from Owatonna High School with the class of 1955 and Mankato State University in 1959 with a degree in Elementary Education. She later obtained her Masters degree from the University of Minnesota in 1970.

Mary was united in marriage to James Frederick on June 28, 1958 at All Saints Catholic Church in Madison Lake. She worked as a special education teacher for 32 years at the Minnesota State Academy for the Blind until her retirement in 1999. Family was very important to Mary, raising her own children and being a foster parent to many.

She and Jim enjoyed hosting many foreign exchange students also. She enjoyed traveling with Jim and wintering in Texas for many years. Her hobbies included crocheting, sewing and quilt making, which she provided for children in Mexico.

She is survived by her husband, James Frederick of Faribault; children, Victoria Dickinson of Weslaco, TX, Roberta (Randy) Sladek of Faribault, Perry (Yosephine) Frederick of Omaha, NE, Penelope (Stacy) Frederick of West Tereehaute, IN, and Melissa (Sandy) Frederick of Fridley; eight grandchildren; many great grandchildren; siblings, Betty Pichner of Bellflower, CA, Harold Cassen (special friend, Wanda) of Arizona, Beverly Edwards of Paradise, CA, and Bill (Melody) Cassen of Georgetown, CA; sister-in-law, Lois Cassen of Lakeville, MN; by a very special student, Blaine Dulas of Blue Earth, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Edith; brother, Allen “Ikey” Casson; and her grandson, Jason Frederick. Mary’s son, Curt Frederick passed away after Mary on March 1, 2019.
